McCain REACHES out to Romney to UNITE GOP
CNN ^ | Feb 8, 2008 | Rebecca Sinderbrand and Mary Snow

Posted on 02/08/2008 12:25:44 PM PST by rface

"I look forward to setting a date for meeting with [Romney] and continuing our efforts as we pledged yesterday to unite the party and move on to victory in November," McCain said in Norfolk, Virginia, on Friday.

Despite McCain's primary wins from coast-to-coast on Super Tuesday, conservatives have expressed uneasiness or outright hostility to his candidacy, including conservative radio talk show hosts Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and Laura In-gra-ham.

"I think Americans need a choice," Huckabee said during a campaign stop in Olathe, Kansas. "This idea that the process of an election becomes a coronation is about as far away from the process... elections are about giving people an option, letting them choose, make their decisions."

According to CNN calculations, Huckabee has 181 delegates to McCain's 714 after Super Tuesday. Huckabee argued, however, he might be able to challenge McCain's nomination at the national convention if Romney's delegates vote for him.

CNN contributor and conservative talk show host Bill Bennett, however, said the reports of the negative response at the conservative conference were overblown and that McCain has started to repair the rift by talking about a need for increased border security.

"He said 'I've heard what you're saying. I'm going to secure the borders,'" Bennett said. "That will make a lot of people happy and make conversation possible."

"There's a different tone today... a different mood. people are adjusting to the idea of John McCain. Some of the talk show hosts are a little behind the people on this one."

I hope that Romney can give some support, even with a horrid taste in his mouth that I am sure he has about McCain. It is a value decision on Romney’s part -— a personal one. It is difficult to support a traitor to conservative principles, if you are a REAL conservative. But sometimes winning the war, is more important than just winning a short term battle....

Americans did choose. That's why McCain's winning. We may not appreciate the choice, but it is what it is. Primaries and caucuses were held, and McCain's ahead. End of story.

That will happen when the CPUSA endorses Pat Buchanan.

I think most will as the alternative is Huckabee. It actually is a lose lose deal but at least McCain has a shot of helping the GOP to keep some numbers in the congress.

The end of the story will be in the 34 state loss by McCain in November, Sandy.

“Huckabee argued, however, he might be able to challenge McCain’s nomination at the national convention if Romney’s delegates vote for him”

I hope it would be a cold day in hell before a Romney delegate would vote for Huckabee after what Huckabee has done to Romney during the campaign.

You know, I will fight for what I believe in, I will pour time, money, effort and energy into what I believe, and have in the past done this for President Bush and OH officials. I am still supporting Huckabee’s slim to none chance to win this thing or get a brokered convention at worst, but it seems the power moguls are deciding for us now.

I still remember my 6 month pregnant wife going door to door in 2000 to get President Bush elected AGAINST the anti-conservative McCain! She was so proud of herself, getting 200 signatures to get Bush on the ballot here. She got to have a front row seat and talk with the President as a result. I went door to door on election day in 2004, fighting tooth and nail for every vote I could get from sun up to sun down, while my wife made phone calls.

My wife and I talked about it. If McCain gets the nomination, we’re done. We’re through. The RNC can call me all they want. The Congressional and Senate Republicans can email me all they want. McCain’s candidacy can stuff my mailbox all they want. No money, no time, no effort for this cause. Call it what you want, but I cannot give my energy to this cause.

I will vote. That is extent of it.
