Bush Signals Support for McCain

By Peter Baker

President Bush plans to give an implicit endorsement of onetime rival John McCain's conservative bona fides tomorrow as the Arizona senator seeks to consolidate the party behind his candidacy.

In a speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference in the morning, Bush plans to say that the nominee of the party will be a strong conservative, according to excerpts released by the White House tonight.

The only bright side is that George Bush has guaranteed that the family name Bush will never be considered for high office again. Ronald Reagan’s greatest mistake was his choice of running mate. I was warming up slightly to holding my nose and pulling the lever for McCain, but this story just negated all that.

Bush and McCain (and others) did everything they could to shove this amnesty down our throats. It's all about the money and power/party.

We are in truly sad times if it takes Bush to deem someone a “true conservative”. Bush is barely more conservative than Bill Clinton was.

Well, that should pretty well swipe the conservative votes from McCain.

How do you say 'wrong' in Spanish? This country is already overrun by illegals, and when the shamnesty bill goes thru, Bush's Hispanic nephew will run. The legacy continues.

Possibly the greatest waste of a presidency. The best of choices at the time, but a detached elite that greased the skids for the demise of America. I could care less what that man thinks.

Put a fork in me I am done.
I just changed my party affiliation to “decline to state”.
My guess is that the GOP wont care but it made me feel better to not be officially tied to ‘them’ any longer.

Well this certainly falls under the “takes one to know one” category. Which is probably why Jorge is so mistaken about little Juanito. “Strong conservative” my @$$.

The plan was this: draft McCain - draft! like McLettuce needed to be drafted! - and put others in the race to feel out Republicans, right and moderate.

This has happened. We got a socon, a fincon, a milcon and and allcon (Thompson). Well, we also got a nutcon (Paul).

The establishment crowned McLettuce years ago, and used this primary for data-gathering, but also told the other guys whoever finishes first behind McCain gets the Veep.

Romney did this today, and McCain’s statement ‘me & Mitt will talk later’ was a blatant hint that Mitt was the VP pick. Mitt can take a break, watch Huck get slaughtered, get to know the global establishment he doesn’t already know, and get named Veep as soon as Huck is put to bed.

Combined delegate counts for McCain and Mitt (their combined popular vote: 4.7 mil McCain, 4 mil Mitt) assure a GOP win. The conservatives that sat this out will find this ticket palatable.

Notice how everybody at CPAC underlined the imperative to kill Obama or Clinton.
