If McCain is the nominee, and he likely will be (as I have said here before), the case for voting for him is a simple one: The alternative is HillaBill. Do you really need a better reason than that?

Having said that, no Republican can win this election. Period. Most of the voters in this country are not ideological conservatives. Most voters describe themselves as “moderates” or middle of the road. What that really means is that they vacillate over the years on various issues of importance, and may be won over by either Republican or Democrat candidates. The Republican Party under Bush has squandered its credibility, and much of the country wants “change.” A Democrat in the WH is inevitable next year. McCain has the best chance against a Dem, precisely because he is NOT a conservative, but even he is likely to fall short. Die-hard conservatives will not vote, and the “soft” Republican (non-ideological) voters and independents will go Democrat. It is inevitable, in large part because of an unpopular war in Iraq and a severe recession that will be in full force by November.

The Republican Party squandered its credibility by demonstrating that conservatism was nothing more than a half-baked version of socialism. Socialism-lite is in fact the least defensible position to take (if implementing socialism is worth doing at all, it's worth doing well; if it's not worth doing well, it's not worth doing at all), but that's all most people hear from most Republicans.

Every student of History knows that every nation or empire eventually meets its end.

I have often wondered what would bring about America's end and it is becoming quite clear: America may have reached the point where it is simply too stupid to survive.
