Republican John McCain asked disgruntled conservatives to support his presidential bid on Thursday, shortly after Mitt Romney ended his struggling campaign and made McCain the all-but-certain nominee.
McCain assured a conference of conservative activists he was one of them, citing his commitment to win in Iraq, halt Iran's nuclear ambitions and rein in the federal government while drawing sharp contrasts with potential Democratic opponents Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama.
McCain's speech, which drew boos on the topic of illegal immigration, followed by a few hours Romney's surprise announcement at the conference that he was ending his run to allow Republicans to focus on the November election.
"I feel I have to now stand aside, for our party and for our country," the former Massachusetts governor told the shocked crowd, some of whom gasped and shouted "No, no!" in response.

Isn't that the truth? I don't want another Joycelyn Elders asking for students to be taught Masterbation, and Maxine Waters asking for ebonics to be added to the curriculum, Barney Frank heading up the Civil Union rights package, I certainly don't want to hear BJ being used on the evening news as it relates to the President of the United States in the Oval Office. .. i could go on..but you get the idea
I don’t think Zell Miller will vote for Hillary or Obama.
If he fails in November, I hope he gives Mexico a try.
“F” McCain and the maverick he rode in on! He should fall on his sword before the convention, and well before he takes the party down into the sewer in November.
I will vote for McCain if he picks a solid conservative Veep.
Who exactly in the GOP fits that description?
That was then, and this is Now... we have to deal with realities.
Fine. I was pointing out you are only posting one side of the whole story on him.
I dunno, I dunno....
One question: how long before McPain decides it’s politically expedient to throw our fighting men and their leaders under the bus, because his friend Teddy Kennedy tells him he’d better do it?
The man is not honorable.
“A political party cannot be all things to all people. It must represent certain fundamental beliefs which must not be compromised to political expediency, or simply to swell its numbers.”

Thank you, and Mitt would of sure looked good in the Oval Office, but I have to get over what could of been... as Mitt said... sighs.
You are wrong about that. Also it will take an excited base that goes all out like we did for W in 2004. The democrats will get 60,000,000 votes this time and without enthusiasm and holding noses to vote....McCain would be lucky to get 40 million. No matter what McCain does he will not be able to get conservatives excited to the point of giving their all to get him elected.
I am still working on doing that, I guess that is where John McCain is going to have to really start wooing his conservative base. I hope that McCain can start enticing revenue soon.
Look at it this way, we might all have to hold our noses to vote for McCain and he still may not win, but at least we will know we didn’t vote for the Hildabeast.
I will support him just as soon as he kicks his ass kicked in November.
Conservatives only support conservatives...he ain’t getting any.
errr...
I mean I will support him after he gets his butt kicked in November.
I would rather have a person with a (D) next to their name drag the country through hell then a person with an (R) who is really a democrat in disguise.
You McCain supporters need to wake up and realize he will bend us all over a log the first chance he gets if elected.
McCain is unelectable and I hope the conservative base sees to it that it stays that way.
I put the Rumsfield quote under my McCain for President Button on my Profile. Thanks..
I have witnessed McCain stand by the Troops when he didn’t have too, that has been his one constant virtue.
