(CNN) Mitt Romney is backing away from a statement that seemed to denigrate former GOP presidential candidate Robert Dole, who wrote a letter to Rush Limbaugh yesterday defending the former Massachusetts governors main Republican rival, John McCain.
In a FOX interview Tuesday morning, Romney had said the former Kansas senator was probably the last person I would have wanted to have write a letter for me.

How very childish...
Dole said so flat out on H&C last night. he sounded positively senile to my husband and i, it was scary. of course he is all for McCain, McCain is the BobDole of 2008, and the margin of defeat is likely to be about the same, as well.
I can’t stand any of ‘em...
I support my local bar on election day, cheap beer, a good cigar and a damn fine rib eye sandwich, a platform I endorse wholeheartedly.
(Though I normally like Rush I think he has been out to lunch this go around...)
Since Dole ran one of the worst campaigns in recent memory, and many people are already making comparisons between the Dole campaign and McCain (old senator, moderate/liberal, getting the nomination because it's his "turn"), I can understand what Romeny was saying.
Must be this new Conservatism where you are indignant to War Heroes...
I see you are following the McCain talking points. Any time someone says anything negative, pull out the War Hero card. Well, Mitt is not my guy (I voted for Fred), but Mitt's comment cast no aspersions on Dole's military or public service.
I'm not thrilled with either of the choices left in the race, but come November, I might be persuaded to pull a lever for Romney. If it is McCain, I will not cast a vote for president for only the 2nd time in my life. (Guess who was running the first time?) McCain gets too much joy from screwing over conservatives for me to ever trust him.
No it doesn't stick in my gullet, it make me happy, it's good for Conservatism in the long run. Why would a conservative vote for a liberal, like McCain?
You seem bound and determined to apologize for McCain and have nothing but contempt for Romney. Only makes me dig in my heels even more.
McCain? There’s so much wrong with him that there wouldn’t be enough hours in the day to tell it all. But the topper of all of it to me is that he treats his Republican “friends” like dogcrap and sucks up to the damn lousy stinkin Democrats. That’s more than enough to make me sour and I suspect Rush feels the same way.
Of course not. Vote for whomever you want. Write in Micky Mouse if that makes you happy.
It is only Democrats in Michigan who force you to vote for a certain candidate.
Hey misinformed “Dittohead” here is the letter read it.
http://youdecide08.foxnews.com/2008/02/04/bob-dole-defends-john-mccain-in-letter-to-rush-limbaugh/
and then answer why Romney said of Dole thats a kind endorsement I wouldn’t want.
Take the whole thing in not talking points.. think for yourself.
Wrong. Dole's run in 1996 was better than Bush41`s run in 1992. Goldwater's pathetic effort in 1964 was far and away the worst effort by a GOP nominee over the last 50 years.
If somehow Romney the liberal is nominated, it could be the all time effort in futility.
You nailed it. Dole’s slogan was, “It’s Bob Dole’s turn!” (Note the obligatory use of the third person.)
Romney explained why he would NOT want Dole to endorse him if he were McCain:
>In Charleston, Romney said his comment about Dole was only meant to point out that the selection of our nominee based on someone having served in the Senate a long time did not do well for us in that election.
In other words, the very argument used by Dole to claim the nomination is now used by McCain (it’s MY turn!). And look how well Dole went over.
Romney had every right to go after Dole. Dole was underhanded in making a private email public.
It is quite obvious that conservatives do not want a liberal McCain as the nominee. Its not just Rush, Sean, Laura, Levin, etc....its most conservatives.
Its only the liberals and liberal media that wants McCain.
Absolutely correct.
Romney’s got a very good record actually. Unlike Huckabilly, he cut taxes and vetoed in-state tuition for illegals. He lobbied Congress for a Federal marriage amendment back in 2005 when McCain opposed it.
And here’s what Bork said about Romney’s record:
Judge Robert Bork: “No other candidate will do more to advance the conservative judicial movement than Governor Mitt Romney. He knows firsthand how the judicial branch can profoundly affect the future course of a state and a nation. I greatly admired his leadership in Massachusetts in the way that he responded to the activist court’s ruling legalizing same-sex ‘marriage.’”
If ALL Conservatives hate McCain then McCain would have lost every state. If all Republicans are Conservatives then McCain would have lost every state. The problem that you are facing is that not ALL Conservatives hate McCain and not all Republicans are Conservatives.
PS: McCain lost Michigan.
I have not horse in this race.. I am for equal treatment if Romney is such a good Conservative then his record should reflect it... Right?
Obviously McCain is flawed and has done some stupid stuff but not always and he has fought Conservative battles..
Now he gets put down like he is Hillary herself and Romney who has done nothing but Pander a Conservative position.. talk, talk, talk, Mr. $50.00 abortions will never get my support...
The piece of trash was written by the McCain people, it was posted yesterday, I tell you what, you get Bob Dole to get on national TV and tell everyone that he doesn't want anyone to vote for his wife this year if they disagree with him. And especially tell Mormons that their vote for his wife are not welcome In North Carolina. It is not going to happen and Bole will never endorse McCain as long as he thinks there could be a backlash against Elizabeth.
Good chance Thompson would have stayed in until at least today if he had some support from the likes of Limbaugh, who was busy telling everybody he wouldn't support anybody and then proceeded to unleash on McCain.
I understand his dislike for the man and its justifiable, but MYTH WILLARD is hardly a conservative and Limbaugh is being disingenuous when he implies that he is.
Rush not doing anybody any good at the moment.
"... a candidate on our side who does embody all three legs of the conservative stool, and that's Romney.
Much like Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh has lost his mind and is no longer a leader in the conservative movement. Romney is the least conservative of the top three remaining GOP candidates.
Romney is nothing more than a liar, a phony and a fraud.
I would disagree.
It was LBJs ad with “the girl, the daisy and the bomb” that destroyed BG.
People were stupid then and they are stupid now.
