Berkeley to rethink its declaration against the Marines
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | February 4, 2008 | Carolyn Jones

(02-04) 18:52 PST Berkeley -- A week after blasting the Marines as "unwelcome intruders" in Berkeley, two city council members want the city to back off the declaration that ignited the wrath of the nation's right wing and inspired a Republican senator to try to sever Berkeley's federal funding.

Council members Betty Olds and Laurie Capitelli proposed today that Berkeley rescind its letter to the U.S. Marine Corps that stated that the downtown Berkeley recruiting center "is not welcome in our city," and publicly declare that Berkeley is against the war but supports the troops.

The city council will vote on Olds' and Capitelli's two proposals at its Feb. 12 meeting.

"I think we shouldn't be seen across the country as hating the Marines," said Olds, who voted against last week's proposals. "If you make a mistake, like we did, you should admit it and correct it and move on."

Oh, one other thing... generally, the people did not seem at all happy or friendly, but I'm not sure that it's an unusual observation in the Bay Area.

I live in Southern California and enjoy visiting the Bay Area very much. The city council in Berkely may be left wing nut jobs, but the area is just beatiful. Los Angeles has more than its share of idiots too.

To late! Best outcome, Marines stay and Berkeley get no Federal dollars.

BTW, do read Secion 4b.14, close to the top of the PDF file found in the following post. Berkeley’s “Peace and Justice Commission” made the recommendation (very nasty stuff, btw). The country needs to read this very carefully.

Also, the Telephone Number of the Chairperson is at the bottom of the recommendation, I believe. (See post #50)

Here is the link to Section 4b.14. It is a very large PDF file, and even with my fast laptop it takes a few minutes to load.

“I understand that there are people across the country that may not agree with this action, Bates whined,

Bates whined! LOL!!

Sounds like things are getting hot and heavy in Berkeley.

The mayor realizes they bit off more than they can chew.

God Bless Senator DeMint.

Thanks for the link, Smooth.

I doubt the loss of maoney will deter the city council....besides they know they have enough liberal allies in congress that it will never get anywhere.

My guess anyway

...inspired a Republican senator to try to sever Berkeley's federal funding.

This is the ONLY reason the Berkescum would change their position.

It's hard to take a "Principled" stand when you're about to lose your cash cow to the slaughterhouse.

Permanently pull all federal funding and let these bast@rds rot!

"Berkeley is against the war but supports the troops."

Lord strike me if those aren't Democrat Party marching orders.

As the old saying goes, the fish stinks from the head. President Bush hasn’t said a word about any of this, has he?

You're right. Berkeley has been that way as long as I remember (early 60s).

It's a town that lives off the University of California's fat.

"After the items passed, the council was besieged with criticism from right-wing groups and military supporters."

I agree. Conspicuously absent are mentions of ANY prominent democrats condemning Berkeley.

I loved the reactions. I don't know who "powermom" is, but she'd be right at home here on FR. If she isn't already. She's just destroying the leftists.
