(02-04) 18:52 PST Berkeley -- A week after blasting the Marines as "unwelcome intruders" in Berkeley, two city council members want the city to back off the declaration that ignited the wrath of the nation's right wing and inspired a Republican senator to try to sever Berkeley's federal funding.
Council members Betty Olds and Laurie Capitelli proposed today that Berkeley rescind its letter to the U.S. Marine Corps that stated that the downtown Berkeley recruiting center "is not welcome in our city," and publicly declare that Berkeley is against the war but supports the troops.
The city council will vote on Olds' and Capitelli's two proposals at its Feb. 12 meeting.
"I think we shouldn't be seen across the country as hating the Marines," said Olds, who voted against last week's proposals. "If you make a mistake, like we did, you should admit it and correct it and move on."

ooooooooooh the loss of $$$$$$$$. *spit*
I believe they’re getting about 2.1 Mil, be nice if that was dropped to zero.
Ahnold has been awfully quiet on this thing.
I guess Maria has his testicles in the locked box again.
I think we may have just learned what price liberals put on their principles. Senator DeMint threatens to push to have $2.1 million in earmarks for Berkeley projects removed from the appropriations and two councilors capitulate. How much would it cost to get the whole lot to shut up? It could be money well-spent. ;^)
Did the Berkely councilmembers fart into wine glasses and then savored the bouquet, a la South Park Frisco?
I think the hand writings on the wall they’re going to back off no matter what Medea thinks.
I also think the Code Pinkos are going to lose their parking spot. LOL!
A putrefying diseased old slut gets religion...
Bring on the hippie dozers!
Rethink? Doesn’t that require thinking to have occurred before?
Good point! You know they’re still going to hate all our military no matter what they do to keep the funding.
Threaten the gravey train and they say,”Um, lets forget it and move on.” BS!
Berkeley is sick. Satan is alive and well there.
I cannot believe the mayor of berkley claims to be a former Army captain. But then, Benedict Arnold was a general.
I was impressed with two things about Berkeley...
1. I really think that Berkeley must have the among highest density of beggars and panhandlers in California. Honestly, I have never seen so many. Some are surprisingly young, most are filthy. (Which leads me to ...)
2. Berkeley itself appears filthy. Litter, spray- painted urban "art", and the aroma of human waste products ripening in the alleys, staircases, building alcoves, seemingly everywhere.
Perhaps things have improved since the 90s, but I sincerely doubt it.
Oh, one other thing... generally, the people did not seem at all happy or friendly, but I'm not sure that it's an unusual observation in the Bay Area.
Needless to say, this Marine Dad will be sure to avoid any future commerce in Berkeley.

Only two? Sorry, not enough to put Berkley in anyone's good graces. Council members say they are not against the warriors but against the war. So, tell me, how is making it impossible to get troops, (warriors), who do many other things besides fighting wars, supporting them? I think all funding for the city of Berkley for any protective services of the city (police, firefighting, etc.) should be haulted. Many of people in those jobs have often served in the military, learned their skills in the military, and have family members in the military. Give those service people jobs in cities that don't deny the military recruiters and let Berkley protect itself with no help from any county, state or federal governments. Then see how "peaceful" a community they will have!
I haven’t figured that out either but I guess the military has a few losers, we know of one for sure.
That doesn’t surprise me. I’ve only been to a couple cities in the Bay area but not Berkeley, I for sure won’t be going there now.
