If you’re looking for a falloff in the performance of the Toyotas during preseason testing, you won’t find it at California. Denny Hamlin posted the top two speeds at the two-mile track Thursday morning in two different Joe Gibbs racing Camrys — the Nos. 11B (182.523 mph) and 11A (181.800 mph).

Ryan Newman was third at 181.511 mph in the No. 12A Penske Racing Dodge. DEI’s Mark Martin had the fastest Chevrolet (fifth overall at 181.456 mph). Defending Cup champion Jimmie Johnson struggled early, posting the 38th-best speed (177.940 mph) in the No. 48A Hendrick Chevy.

We’ll see what they can do when they fire the engines at Daytona on the 17th and have to run with the big boys.
