I will not attack McCain's POW status or time. I respect and am humbled by what all of those men went through for serving their country and being taken by such animal enemies.
That does not change my opposition to his political activites, as I point out in post 3.
One I purposely did not list there because it is too easy for some people to try and tie to his POW time (which I do not tie to it), is the arrogant and mean spirited way he treated veterans and their families who opposed him in the hearings on normalization of relations with Vietnam.
Despite his own service and his own treatment at the hands of the NV...I did not appreciate the way he treated those other vets. He did not have to be so acidic to them at all while maintaining his political position on that issue (which I also did not agree with).
Yes, it is the man’s status as a war casualty that should not be attacked. I’m all right with anyone questioning any candidate’s record.
But, in all things military I do defer to him. He is the son of an admiral, who was the son of an admiral, and he himself attained the rank of Navy Captain. The military is in his blood, and I’ve no doubt that he was injured by it.
It cannot help but affecting his mind. I cannot believe it didn’t. I have years of experience as a military counselor, and there is no way that McCain is not injured in ways we don’t see.
His outbursts are one indication of the injury. I believe this is addressed in the letter from his fellow POW:
“He heard the voices of the officers rising until they were shouting angrily at McCain and threatening him. This was followed by screams of agony from John McCain, and a stream of obscenities from him. He could not see what they did to him and I never heard from John McCain what it was...”
In this regard, the man has my sympathy.
