Dyspepsia on the Right
New York Times ^ | February 4, 2008 | By WILLIAM BRISTOL

Posted on 02/04/2008 10:53:49 AM PST by TinaJeannes

The prospect of John McCain as the likely Republican presidential nominee has produced a squall of anger on the right. Normally reserved columnists and usually ebullient talk-radio hosts vie to express their disgust with McCain, and their disdain for the Republicans who are about to nominate him. The conservative movement as a whole appears disgruntled and dyspeptic.

Now I have nothing against a certain amount of disgruntlement and dyspepsia. The ways of the world, and the decisions of our fellow Americans, occasionally warrant such a reaction.

But American politics tends to be unkind to movements that dwell in anger and relish their unhappiness. In the era from Franklin D. Roosevelt to John F. Kennedy, liberals tended to be happy warriors — and that helped their cause. The original civil rights movement succeeded in part because it worked hard to transcend a justifiable bitterness. Liberalism faltered when it became endlessly aggrieved and visibly churlish.

You’ve got to see that even if McCain makes “moderate” choices for the court that is better than straight, out and out left-wing-activist choices.

McCain is a backstabbing, egotistical old man who cannot be trusted. I don't want him anywhere near the Oval Office. If you believe he'll make "moderate" choices for the court, you are treating McCain as your personal Rorshach test. Any judicial choices he might make he would first vet with his liberal buddies in the Senate, both to ensure passage, and most importantly, to ensure favorable coverage with the media.

So you are saying that McCain’s picks would NOT be better than Obama’s or Hillary’s? Obama and Hillary will appoint left wing activists. McCain will not.

McCain is the angriest, most dyspesic candidate on both sides. How is this article consistent?

I agree, we need a happy warrior like Reagan. McCain would probably be the most distempered presidential candidate ever. How long before he loses his temper and goes crazy.

Your are not making sense.

See if this makes any sense. If it does not, then I'm afraid there is nothing further I can give you, and any subsequent responses to your posts would be unprofitable:

I would not, under ANY circumstances, vote for John McCain, not if either Hillary or Obama were the alternative. Evil is safer than crazy. Leftie amateur inexperience is safer than crazy. I don't want an unstable man like McCain anywhere near the nuclear football; he is not fit for command.

I agree wholeheartedly with Ann Coulter, who wrote:

“I’d rather deal with President Hillary than with President McCain. With Hillary, we’ll get the same ruinous liberal policies with none of the responsibility.”

Your post has nothing to do with court picks, which is what we’ve been going over for the last three or four posts between us. Hillary and Obama’s court picks will be left wing activists. McCains will be moderates (at worst) . . . You are leaving the realm of reason and common sense and entering the territory of pique and tantrum throwing if you don’t see the difference between the Dems and McCain on the court . . . and the importance to the country of not having several court picks left in the hands of Hillary or Obama.

I have a terrible cold, and I feel like hell, so let me just tell it like it is: Krystol is the kind of little girlyman that my friends and I on the street in Baltimore when I was a kid used to bitch-slap about once a month without fail just to keep him from whining us all to death. The’s guys an effeminite little worm.

I saw all of that bs back in 2000.

Here are the dates, in the order I put up the links, that those 7 articles were published.

01/09/08
07/11/02
01/21/00
01/11/08
02/22/00
01/12/07
04/04/06

Apparently your honesty is about as reliable as your candidates.
You don't bother to say just which of those highly respected conservative publications and authors is bs-ing or on what.

why arent u angry with bush over his statement that he would sign immigration bill?

I am. Extremely!

and why did you vote him back in after he signed mccain feingold, which some of you so vehemently oppose. god only knows why.

No, I know why I voted for him. One, he didn't author it and he even said it would be knocked down as unConstitutional by the SC. He misjuged the SC. He was right about the bill. Two, in spite of many things I disagree with GWB on he is not a liar.

I know that many of you will probably not purchase ads for an election *L*

Thanks to McCain's CFR bill, which wipes his butt with the Constitution, I can't can I?

The fact that I am on the right and not going to vote for McCain under any circumstance has nothing to do with disgruntlement and dyspepsia. I make choices all the time on all manner of things and this is just another one of those choices.
