WASHINGTON (Map, News) - Sen. John McCain, riding a wave of primary victories and favorable polls, is seen by many Illinois Republican insiders as the front-runner in the state's presidential primary.
...
Romney's Illinois highlight was a presidential straw poll at the state fair last August, when about 1,000 people cast votes and he won with 40 percent - twice as much as the second-place finisher, Fred Thompson, who now backs McCain.

Thompson was a prominent McCain supporter in 2000, and it’s likely he would back the Arizona senator if he dropped out of the race. But Rollins and Huckabee have repeatedly slammed Thompson since a debate in South Carolina, when the former senator tore into Huckabee, accusing him of “liberal” policies on foreign affairs and economics. In turn, Rollins called Thompson “a successful lobbyist and so-so actor” who was “never a Reaganite,” noting Thompson had backed Reagan’s GOP opponents in primaries in 1976 and 1980.

Maybe they are twisting his arm to get him to deny it, and if he doesn’t they can repeat it all over the place.

"I’d say it’s a deliberate lie to manipulate the vote,"

And from the looks of some of the posters here, it worked! lol

Written like the type of person who supports RINOs.

I am done with the lesser of evils.

It seems that if FT were supporting JM it would be really big news and not at the bottom of a small story.
I have my suspicions.

I’m with you! But frankly, although Fred had it right on all the issues, I don’t think he EVER gave a rip about the presidency. Being “right” on the issues isn’t enough. He had to care enough about this country to fight to be in the position to see his issues through. He didn’t. So, since he and McCain are buddies, I wouldn’t be shocked if he backs McCain. Does it matter in the end?

If McCain is the GOP nominee, then Republican will get blown out of Congress. This race isn’t just about president. It is also for one-third of the Senate and all of the House.

Liberals will come out to vote for... Democrats.
Moderates will come out to vote for McCain and... Democrats.
Conservatives will stay home and not vote for anyone.

When it’s all over, Democrats will have a filibuster-proof Super Majority in the Senate, and margins so wide in the House that the liberals will run amok.
Republican governors will fall across the country.

This is what McCain brings to the GOP ticket. This is his unseen legacy in the GOP.

Yeah, a simple question with zero editorializing is gushingly hopeful? That’s good you can acertain emotions so easily. Dr. Phil may need a stand it someday.

Just for the heck of it — if you’re going to insist on insulting someone on here (adding “no offence” which is absurd when the insult is intentional), at least spell “offense” correctly.

I would have thought so too, which is why I asked if anyone else had maybe seen it and I had missed it.

No, you’re the idiot. I realized Thompson was McCain’s stalking horse a long time ago.

Actually, I don’t support RINOs at all. I support Romney.

But if you write in Thompson, that means you’ll be supporting the true RINO — McCain.

I’ve looked all over cbs.com for a picture of Thompson at a McCain event. Do you have a link?

"It’s a comin’ in all likelyhood. Prepare yourself"

I will be very surprised if it doesn't since I thought from the beginning that the ONLY reason Thompson was in the race was to further dilute the vote and run interference for McCain.

Romney?

You mean the guy who was strongly pro-abortion until, what, two weeks ago?

They guy who still supports Brady gun laws and ugly-gun bans?

The guy who socialized medicine in MA?

Mitt’s a complete pathetic liar.

"This is what McCain brings to the GOP ticket. This is his unseen legacy in the GOP."

Hey! It's what the GOP wants - ONE big happy party without those despicable conservatives who cause all the trouble. With McCain, "Can't we all just get along?" YES, at last, we can. /s

I haven’t read any ‘endorsement’ from Fred, but on CBS this weekend in a campaign rally shot, it sure looked like Fred there giving McCain a big hug.

I can’t say for sure, but it looked like him.

I saw the same news clip and thought it was Duncan Hunter.

Hey this is kinda fun! Just throw crap against the wall and see what sticks.

Well, I’ve been searching Google News and still have not found any other source that claims Fred is backing McCain, but a lot are claiming that Fred is ‘expected’ to back McCain...
