Most germane part of the article:

"With his name still on the ballot, Thompson is likely to win delegates from Tennessee even after his withdrawal. In 1996, Lamar Alexander — former governor and now a U.S. Senator — withdrew as a candidate for President under similar circumstances and, despite his endorsement of Bob Dole, got 11% of the vote. Tennessee is not a winner-take-all state, and under party rules a candidate needs 20% of the vote statewide, or in a congressional district, to win delegates. Thompson may well reach that threshold, leaving delegates committed to him for two ballots at the convention — unless he releases them."

Go Fred!

Why on Earth would Fred betray his conservative principals and endorse a liar and liberal like Romney?!

I understand tactical voting and holding one’s nose to vote for Romney, but to ENDORSE something like Romney . . that’s a betrayal of basic conservative values.

Oh, I’ve seen it.

I can’t stand any of the three remaining RINOS of the Conservative Apocalyspe.

I will vote Thompson, and encourage others to do so.

Hoping for a disputed convention.

Most homosexuals in the GOP are actually strongly supporting McCain. See the earlier thread detailing this fact today.

I did watch the video. I can’t deny that Romney has taken some leftist views in the past. Those views are very troubling.

But, Romney never has expressed disdain for social conservatives. And, he came from a very liberal state. Romney is just a guy who will say what it takes to get elected. I do think he will stay with the folks who “bring him to the dance” though. And, he is a Mormon and because of that I suspect deep down he leans conservative.

In contrast, McCain has shown contempt for social conservatives. In 2000 he branded social conservative religious leaders as “agents for intolerance.” He campaigned and led the fight on the Senate floor against the Marriage Amendment. And, he comes from a conservative state. Rick Santorium said McCain had a disdain for social conservative issues. I believe Santorium.

“Romney is just a guy who will say what it takes to get elected.”

I agree: Romney is basically an amoral, gutless, say-anything, panderer just like the Clintons.

And, no, that’s not an endorsement of McCain.

I have left the plantation.

Thompson was a prominent McCain supporter in 2000, and it’s likely he would back the Arizona senator if he dropped out of the race. But Rollins and Huckabee have repeatedly slammed Thompson since a debate in South Carolina, when the former senator tore into Huckabee, accusing him of “liberal” policies on foreign affairs and economics. In turn, Rollins called Thompson “a successful lobbyist and so-so actor” who was “never a Reaganite,” noting Thompson had backed Reagan’s GOP opponents in primaries in 1976 and 1980.

He would not same scenario different year, these people putting thier captions on Fred Bashing McCain, forget the history of what has allready set precedent.
LOL

Maybe, but recall McCain’s betrayal of the conservatives are all POST 2000 -— and also recall that Thompson became notably more conservative as time went on.

Two friends on opposite paths, so to speak.

The Thompson of today endorsing the McCain of today? Possible, but doubtful.
