Earl Butz has died
02/02/08

Posted on 02/02/2008 1:48:36 PM PST by Borges

(The Indianapolis Star can't be posted so I'm paraphrasing and proving the link.)

He was Secretary of Agriculture under Nixon and Ford. He had to resign because of a racist 'joke'. He was 98.

P.S. Hope you liked my Obit style. Maybe I should work for the AP.

That’s “stereotyping”. Not the same as racism. Some stereotypes may be racist but since I want all three of those same things and I’m white.... Everybody can deconstruct what was or was not said and what was or was not implied forever but it’s all just mental masturbation.

This reply of yours is unintelligent and insulting. The joke presents a negative, demeaning stereotype of black people which is a racist thing to do, as I and others have carefully and patiently explained repeatedly on this thread. Perhaps this seems like "mental masturbation" to you because you lack the intelligence and character to understand what is being said.

Did you ever read the ‘joke’? It’s disgusting and not postable here.

Not only read, I've told it! It is funny. Not for this forum, of course, but it was never intended to be. It was a bit of humor that did exactly what humor does best, high-light and defuse social tensions. Obviously I would never tell it in your presence, you are way to PC and quick to judge others without understanding context or reason. But I have told it in adult, multi-ethnic groups, that is men having fun being men, with some success. And I have laughed at similar jokes. Perhaps you can join a sewing circle and discuss 'disgusting' with the other women.

Poor Earl was slandered by this joke by his politcal enemies. When you want to beat a dog, any stick will do, and this PC mantra was used on Earl. He was a decent man and a pox on the people who brought him down.

As soon as we saw this thread we knew four things before clicking on it:

Your point? I mean is there a connection with your observation and the post?

I think the "loose shoes" may be intended to indicate laziness, shiftlessness, unseriousness.

Flag on the play, uniformed player on the field! LOL, so don't get offended. It is an observation that certain black men would dress up to go party, and one of the dress items was a pair of good-looking, pointed, shoes. These were not the ordinary shoes, they were for dress and were uncomfortable. Loose shoes of course were more comfortable, hence desirable for day to day wear. The juxtaposition of loose and tight was was made the joke funny.

They finally let Monk in, huh? Many years too late, IMO.

I didn't read the exact quote and nor do I care to. I just went by what one of the posters said. And from that, it wasn't racist. What YOU said would be called racist because it was based on language from the slave holding period over a hundred years ago that considered the black people nothing more than farm animals.

My point is racism by definition is used by blacks as a sledgehammer for anything these days. They would be well served if they reread the story of the girl who cried wolf.

Because quite frankly, the awful horror of institutionalized human slavery is being marginalized by the loose bandying about of the R word...

Let's be honest. It's not just the black guys. Most American males' needs would be satisfied by those three things.

Nice, feel free to continue chasing your tail but you aren’t going to change any minds. I’m saddened that you feel the need to insult the intelligence of someone that was just hoping that this pointless and endless arguing about what is, ultimately, semantics would settle down. You’ve been here long enough that you should know that you aren’t going to change any of the “mindless defenders” or “mindless attackers” and I apologize for interupting your fun...carry on.

I don’t think the comment is necessarily racist as I am a white man and I like all three of those things.

Your skin is too thin.

It was the mildest of jokes.

My Sicilian brothers can come up with something more scathing anytime and it’s against ‘our’ ‘own’ group.

Priggishness is always risible.

The joke was quite mild compared to what you see on MTV these days.

I remember the hatred the leftwingnuts had for him ~ pure unadulterated bigoted hatred.

Fortunately Earl isn't going to have to deal with any of them in Heaven.
