One of the commonest pranks in middle school is ‘shanking’, the practice of coming up behind someone and pulling his pants down around his ankles, leaving him standing there in hall during class change in his underwear,scurrying to get his pants back on.

Shanking is one thing, hanging someone by the neck is entirely another.

As for the "elite private school" snobbery, well, it may not have been "elite" in your terms, but it was at least private. And no one ever got away with a stunt like that on me. Or they ended up bloody.
