Snopes said in 1995 that it was plausible, and it could have easily changed since then. It was not debunked in 1995, it simply wasn’t proven.

I just don’t believe it. Reeks of urban legend.

You’re right wagglebee, this has not been debunked. First it addresses Taiwan over ten years ago while this article is about mainland China. It also mentions that the reason they consider it a non story was that someone told the Clinton administration to look into it and nothing was done or mentioned.

We know how close the Clintons are with the Red Chinese. They would do anything to spare the Chinese a little embarrassment while getting themselves a few extra campaign bucks. (This occurred in 1995.) And with all we know about how enthusiastically they went after Bin Laden, I’m sure we can trust the legendary Clinton inaction to mean there’s nothing at all to this story. /sarcasm off

I don’t believe anything the Red Chinese say, and if the Clintons are their alibi, I know the story must be true.

China and other countries, including the US, has had instances of cannibalism. The History Channel did a show on this.

The red flag on the this story is the location called “Region X.” Is this a mythical place? Without a specific location, how can the story be verified?

There are tons of westerners living in China. Shanghai alone has about 2 million on any given day. There are millions more spread throughout China. Many of them speak and read Chinese. Someone would have noticed.

This just doesn’t pass the smell test. Give me a specific location with independent witnesses and I will reconsider. I would even go there myself on one of my trips to China to check it out first hand.
