I met up with a South American person who told a tale passed down from the grandfather. Apparently, the grandfather confided to the family that while in the Orient, China, I believe, he tasted and acquired a taste for children.

I couldn’t say anything. Then again, from some of the stories I have heard from escaping Africans, people really can do anything to one another.

That time period was documented on the History Channel. This is not a current behavior in China today.

As for the religious aspects, it is not ours to know the end of time, only to be prepared for it when it comes. It is foolish to believe that man can possess the knowledge to understand the time of the end. We can all watch for signs but that often is mixed with the wishes of man for the second coming. Every time man had divined the end times they have been wrong. Many are divining end times today. Time will tell if they are correct.

Sorry for the late response to this week old thread, but I just got a email regarding this subject. So I did a little search, and found the below site, which quotes “The Next Magazine”, a weekly publication from Hong Kong, discussing fetus cannibalism in China.

The article gives names, dates and places.
Sounds pretty plausible after reading it:

If you want it to be true, it is, even if it isn’t.

Snopes lies.

Regarding this story. First off it is China not Taiwan at is parts of the fetus made into a soup and it is touted for its health benefits.

I know this because I have seen it with my own eyes.

My sister was born in Hawaii in ‘63. The nurses brought my mother a small bowl of broth immediately following the birth. There, in the bottom of the bowl, was the umbilical cord.

Drinking it is a Chinese tradition my mother chose not to participate in.

I once read a story by a Korean who visited North East China of which Liao-ling Province is part of. He found something in a tub from some distance, which appeared to be a doll. When he approached closer, he was surprised to find that it was a dead fetus. He asked people what it is for, and they replied they were going to prepare it for a dish. He saw no sign that they were bothered by it in any way. They said in a matter-of-fact manner and were puzzled why he appeared to make such fuss about it.

I think that it is not something people eat regularly like chicken or pork. The percentage of Chinese who actually eat it would be quite small. However, it is more or less culturally accepted practice, even though they do not do it in public.

There is an age-old food myth in China where some exotic food can rejuvenate your health and have miraculous power. I doubt that any exotic food would do such wonders people believe in. However, people do believe them, even though such a belief is usually not a topic of open conversation. It is a hush-hush ancient belief which still have a place in a corner of people's mind in China.

It is common that the more outlandish the food material is, the more people believe it has potent medicinal value. That is what drives this myth. It is rather uncommon, shrouded in outlandish and rather exotic myth. People are drawn to such things.

The historical backdrop which spawned such a belief is that since ancient times, Chinese always have a myth that some exotic plant or food have miraculous medicinal value. They tried to find some magic elixir from hard-to-find food materials, be it a mineral, a plant, an insect, or an animal.

On top of this myth, in China, there was a long practice of gruesome special punishment for (usually political) criminals. They were dismembered and minced, or salted, boiled or made into beef jerkeys. Consuming those meat is an ultimate way of punishment and revenge. Second, China has been subject to massive famine once in a while. Huge number of people perish. Cannibalism, in such a circumstance, became the necessity for survival. All these contributed to more casual attitude of eating fetus flesh or human meat.

In well-known ancient Chinese literature, cannibalism frequently shows up as a topic, usually affiliated to bad guys.

I didn’t say anything about “want[ing] it to be true”.
-after reading the other article:

I said it was “plausible” that this could be happening.

>”Snopes lies.”

-No kidding. Search anything on the Clintons, and you will find that immediately. There was an email circulating about some quotes that Hillary Clinton has made.
Snopes had the quotes, and basically excused every one of her quotes away, saying they were taken out of context, (which is BS). see here:

Snopes editors have a very liberal bias.

Why do you go to China? I'd be scared to death to go there.

I go to China for work, mostly to Shanghai. Many parts of the city are the same as Manhattan, Paris or any other major modern western city. They have KFC, McDonalds, Dairy Queen and Starbuck’s all over the place. They have restaurant styles from all over the world including and Irish Pub run by a real Irish guy. I even found a gun range there. It is a fascinating city.

Next month I will be going several other cities for vacation. It is an exciting place.

Now, having said that, it is a communist country. They can be very cruel to their people. However, they seem to love Americans. I have been treated extremely well there, even by people I do not know.

Thanks for the info. Not that I'd ever have reason to go there, but it's nice to know it's not all dreary & cruel Communism.

Most of the people I know are under 40. They basically ignore the CCP. They just live their lives the best they can. My perception is that they are trying very hard to emulate western life styles.

When you go to the malls in Shanghai they are filled with western style goods. The models in the ads are often blond haired and blue eyed. The Super Brand mall is 10 stories tall.

Having said that... if you get there, only drink bottled water. Never drink tap water.
