Dr. Dobson: I Will Never Vote for McCain
NewsMax ^ | February 1, 2008

While John McCain has risen to the top of the heap among contenders for the Republican presidential nomination, Focus on the Family founder James Dobson remains adamant that he will not support McCain’s bid for the White House.

Dobson, one of the nation’s most influential evangelical Christians, declared more than a year ago that he wouldn't support McCain under any circumstances, saying McCain didn't support traditional marriage values.

A Dobson spokesman told the New York Times’ David Kirkpatrick Wednesday that he stood by that position, and as a matter of conscience could never vote for the Arizona Senator.

According to the paper, Dobson is joined by a slew of other prominent conservatives who oppose McCain on a number of issues:

Talk radio host Mark Levin urged visitors to the National Review’s Web site to “rally for Romney” to ward off a McCain win, saying: “Conservatives need to act now, before it is too late.”

Talker Rush Limbaugh told listeners on Thursday: “McCain is in a lot of these places not actually the Republican candidate. He is the candidate of enough Republicans, but [also] independents and moderates and probably even some liberals.”

Pat Toomey, president of the anti-tax organization Club for Growth, said in comments reported by the New York Times: “I have yet to see McCain make any attempts to reach out to free market conservatives.”

Conservatives fault McCain for voting against President Bush’s tax cuts and a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, and for supporting embryonic stem cell research, looser immigration rules and stricter environmental regulations.

Conservatives were particularly irked when McCain made a deal with Democrats to break a deadlock on judicial nominations, according to the Times.

Anger over that compromise was rekindled this week when Wall Street Journal columnist John Fund wrote that McCain had privately criticized Bush’s Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito because “he wore his conservatism on his sleeve.” The McCain campaign denied that report.

Following McCain successes in early primary states, however, other conservatives are beginning to warm up to his campaign:

Americans for Tax Reform President Grover Norquist, who previously opposed a McCain nomination, said: “He has moved in the right direction strongly and forcefully on taxes.”

Former McCain foe Tony Perkins, a prominent Christian conservative, told the Times: “I have no residual issue with John McCain,” adding the candidate needed to “better communicate” his stand on social issues.

Richard Land, an official with the South Baptist Convention, agreed, noting that McCain “is strongly pro-life.” He said: “When I hear Rush Limbaugh say that a McCain nomination would destroy the Republican Party, what I want to say to Rush is, ‘You need to get out of the studio more and talk to real people.’”

At minimum, he could’ve had the good sense to realize he was stepping into an arena where he was way in over his head. But nooo.

Alas, that’s what power and influence tends all to often to do to a person. Exposes their own feet of clay, donchaknow.

Focus on the Family founder James Dobson has dealt a potentially devastating blow to Fred Thompson’s presidential aspirations, saying the former senator is not a Christian.

“Everyone knows he’s conservative and has come out strongly for the things that the pro-family movement stands for,” Dobson – considered the most politically powerful evangelical figure in the U.S. – said in a phone call to Dan Gilgoff, senior editor at U.S. News & World Report.

“[But] I don’t think he’s a Christian. At least that’s my impression.”

Thompson’s spokesman Mark Corallo took issue with the statement.

“Thompson is indeed a Christian,” he said. “He was baptized into the Church of Christ.”

Yeah, they're gonna have an empty tent with stale popcorn and watered down candidates. And, I do agree w/you that these are interesting times. The future seems to be totally up in the air and we don't know who will get the coin toss.

I'm not panicking cuz I'll never vote for McCain. I can always say, "don't look at me."

Mitt Romney met with a scientist to become educated and more informed about embryonic stem cell research. It was a defining moment for Romney when the scientist said, "Then we kill the embryo."

Mitt changed his views at that moment.

Dr. Dobson: I Will Never Vote for McCain. . .

I cannot bear McCain; but should the option be; our Military with McCain as Commander-in-Chief or Hillary; I think we owe our Military.

It may come a 'past time' moment to get beyond our idiological entrenchments and we must simply 'Support the Troops'; even if we must hold our noses.

Our Military - have, in many situations held their 'collective nose' for America; not to mention the 'lives sacrificed' on our behalf.

Can we just see a bigger picture here; rather than the one framed by our idiological inclinations; no matter how 'right' they are.

'Support our Troops' - and Repubs need to be prepared to do just that. . .so far, they seem to be a forgotten equasion.

Here is a handy dandy chart comparing all of the candidates, remember this when you vote

-----------------------------------------------------------
Fresh national poll numbers from Rasmussen:

In the race for the Republican Presidential Nomination, it’s John McCain at 30%, Mitt Romney at 30%, and Mike Huckabee at 21%. Ron Paul is supported by 5% of Likely Republican Primary Voters…Romney leads by sixteen percentage points among conservatives while McCain has a two-to-one advantage among moderate Primary Voters

…On the Republican side, Missouri and Tennessee are toss-ups while McCain leads in Alabama. McCain has a solid lead in the winner-take-all state of New Jersey and holds modest leads in California, Connecticut, and Illinois.

That’s good to hear.

btw, today I called Dr. Richard Land’s radio show to say that not only did Senator McCain support human embryonic stem cell research, but according to the late Congressman Henry Hyde, John McCain wanted to WEAKEN the pro-life plank of the Republican Party platform, so he is different behind the scenes, than the picture he tries to portray to us.

A VOTE FOR HUCKABEE IS A VOTE FOR HUCKABEE!!

Huckabee - reliably pro-life, not recently pro-life.

Huckabee - reliably pro 2nd amendment, not recently 2nd amendment.
He understands that it is for self defense, not just hunting and sports.

He is an ardent, articulate supporter of the Fair Tax, and I believe he really “gets it”. It is the best hope on the horizon for giving power back to the people, and waking people up to the stranglehold the current tax system has on the people and the economy.

If Duncan Hunter believes he can be trusted on border/immigration and WOT issues, I would trust Duncan Hunter’s informed, educated judgment after he spent a year getting to know the candidates, than I would trust the opinion of any of the haters on here.

Don’t let the people who say he can’t be elected give us another self fulfilling prophecy of having to settle for someone we have to HOPE will do what he says. Right now it’s just name recognition, and when most people get to know Mike Huckabee, they like him.

They were both governors, but the Romney supporters give Romney a pass for not being able to do what he “really” wanted, because he had a Democrat legislature to work with, when Huckabee was able to work successfully with his Democrat legislature.

Every vote for Mike Huckabee on Tuesday will be one more vote to show the establishment and the media that the election can’t be bought and we don’t have to settle for their opinion of “that’s the best we can get”.

“Coulter is an embarrassment to conservatism. She is probably closet communist.”

No she is not, stop telling lies. It is extreamly harmful to be making those kinds of accusations. Face it, the Republican Party has been messed with in a big way. The reality is, no one wants John McCain, yet somehow the voters have been manipulated into voting for him when he is not wanted by the base. I think the Republican Party has been being worked over for a long time now. You are right, someone is communist, but it isn’t Anne Coulter, it is the Clinton Political Machine. The Republican Party has been being manipulated for years now by that machine.

So, what?

Thompson never wrote a paper for or had any significant interaction with CFR.

The group he DID participate heavily in was the American Enterprise Institute, a very conservative think tank.

Fred Thompson NEVER said he was for some “New World Order”.

He is very hostile toward the UN, and stated that Americans should never be under the command of any foreign power at any time. He is against the U.S. being involved in the World Court, and I believe he came out against the Law of the Sea Treaty.

So, what?

So that's an automatic disqualification, as far as I'm concerned. Just on your "say so" I won't be changing my mind about what I think of his involvement with the CFR.

That's nice. I never said he did say that. But he is a globalist and is a member of the globalist entity the Council on Foreign Relations, for which he doesn't get a pass just because you "say so."

“Mitt Romney met with a scientist to become educated and more informed about embryonic stem cell research. It was a defining moment for Romney when the scientist said, “Then we kill the embryo.”

‘The Harvard University researcher with whom Romney met, Douglas Melton, has disputed Romney’s recollection of their Nov. 9, 2004, meeting in the governor’s Statehouse office.’

“Governor Romney has mischaracterized my position; we didn’t discuss killing or anything related to it,” Melton said in a December statement to The Boston Globe. “I explained my work to him, told him about my deeply held respect for life and explained that my work focuses on improving the lives of those suffering from debilitating diseases.”
