I’ve been thinking that one strategy that the Romney campaign might pursue in the next few days is to declare a running mate. I’m hoping for Thompson but Santorum would be exciting as well!

In '76, Reagan tried pre-naming another PA Senator, Dick Schweicker, in an effort to get some of the state's uncommitted delegates . . . it didn't work. Schweicker was named HHS sec. in '81 by Ronaldus Magnus.
Since Santorum lost his own state, he can't be the VP pick. He wouldn't even put PA in play. However, if Romney won, he'd make a great HHS sec, too.
Thompson has foreign policy creds to balance out Romney. I'd rather have a VP who could be a successor in four or eight years. Thompson ain't that.
