![]() Samuel Alito |
Sen. John McCain has denied a report that he privately suggested Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito was too conservative, but columnist Robert Novak writes today that multiple sources confirm the presidential candidate made negative comments about Alito nine months ago.
McCain previously responded to the buzz started by a report Monday by the Wall Street Journal's John Fund, who wrote that the Arizona senator "has told conservatives he would be happy to appoint the likes of Chief Justice Roberts to the Supreme Court. But he indicated he might draw the line on a Samuel Alito because 'he wore his conservatism on his sleeve.'"
McCain reacted in a conference call with bloggers that day, saying he was "astonished" by the Alito quote.
"I don't recall a conversation where I would have said that," McCain said, adding he's repeatedly said at town meetings, "We're going to have justices like Roberts and Alito."
But Novak writes today that he "found what McCain could not remember," a private chat with "conservative Republican lawyers" shortly after he announced his candidacy last April.

McCain isn’t a conservative.
Any more than I’m an Olympic athlete.
More backing of the charge.
‘Can’t seem to remember, my brain’s in a blender, it’s jello! (jellojellojellojello)’
Oh sorry, the words ‘can’t recall’ caught my eye and I thought we were talking about Hillary.
My bad.
Not just Fund...
He's just 'conservative' enough for the Media.
I am not liking this.
But only in the primaries, then McCain's media shield will drop.
Given the gang of 14 - we are going to get lousy judges appointed no matter who gets elected.
And he isn't going to get my vote. Just as I have to punish my children, I will punish the republican party this year with no donations and no votes.
McPain, and I’m not kidding you is a major LYING LIBERAL.
Hand on the Bible - I truly speak the truth about McCain.
Then they will reduce McCain his candidacy to a quivering glob of protoplasm in a matter of days. Hello Pres Hillary!
“I don’t recall a conversation where I would have said that,...”
This is political code for “I don’t think anyone can prove I said it but even if I didn’t, I was thinking it.”
Same here.
I have NEVER offered to sit out an election but if McCain gets the nominee slot as President, I will NOT vote for him. I see very little difference between him, Hitlery and the Obomination. The GOP just might need some "tough love". Stop screwing around with these LIBERALS pretending to be Republicans. Remember after Carter they couldn't wait to get a Republican in the WH. The same could be true with McCain. If he gets in the WH or doesn't, folks will be hungrry for a rational person to clean up the damage.
When McCain tells the truth, it is only so it will help you swallow his lies.
You and me both. I have voted for Republicans for president since Richard Nixon. I will sit out the election if McCain is the nominee. Anyone who believes in open borders and has only flip flopped recently to claim he is for border security will never get my vote. Anyone who is the moving force behind a law that curtails political speech will never get my vote. Anyone who uses dirty tactics lying about his opponent’s record will never get my vote. I sent Mitt Romney a contribution today.
McCain's an unusually good liar. When he and Hillary debate, the lies will fly.
Like the Clintons, McCain is utterly devoid of moral compunction, and thus lies freely, and naturally.
