Everything. If McCain wins, the lesson will be that the Republican candidate can win by giving conservatives the finger. If Romney wins, the lesson is that if you want to run as a Republican, you have to pay homage to the conservatives. So in one scenario, conservatives still have clout in the future, in the other, conservatives will be ignored.

That’s what the conservative movement has to lose.

This is what I don’t get about so many cut off their nose to spite their face conservatives.

They will refuse the guy who’s reaching out to them with an olive branch, because they can’t “trust his conversion to be genuine”, and let the guy who’s been stepping all over them for 20 years win.

And then they’ll scratch their head in 2012 and beyond, wondering why nobody is reaching out to them and everyone is stepping on them.
