Jim, I’ve been vilified by McCaniacs on this forum for saying this but McCain’s POW service is far from exemplary. There have been allegations of collaboration, receiving special treatment made by other POWs who were at the Hanoi Hilton with him. It’s true other POWs have backed him but there are eye witnesses who will come forward and “Swift Boat” McCain.
I agree with your logic and will continue to support Huckabee until someone better emerges.
Thank you for Free Republic.

Sorry, but no.
Voting for Huckabee means McCain would get the nomination. Besides that obvious point, Huckabee wants to close Gitmo and I don’t think he has the intellectual capacity to be POTUS.

The one element of your post that I agree with is that point two is ranked ahead of point three.
I think a brokered convention would be great. I would hope to see such a convention select Pete DuPont, or Virginia Postrel, or maybe P.J. O'Rourke. All of whom are about as likely to be selected as is Fred.

"Number seven, if we can keep Huckabee in the race all the way through, "I think that here is where this idea falls apart- I think Huck is too broke to continue. I sort of had the same idea, using Ron Paul as "None of the Above" just to get a brokered convention. Paul is apparently running on Soro's money, so he's in till the end. We just have to make sure he dosen't win anything.

Congratulations...you have just endorsed the McCain/Huckabee ticket, because that is exactly what is going to happen if people follow your lead. Sorry, Jim ...I won’t follow you over that cliff, dear. I’m holding out for a Romney/Thompson ticket.

At this point, a brokered convention does seem to be the most desirable outcome - a chance for the GOP to put forward a winning candidate - a governor, perhaps.
Unfortunately, the tactic of supporting Huck may simply throw the nomination to McCain.
This is one tough call - as a Canadian FReeper, I sincerely hope you Americans make the right decision!

Question: Since it is the result most fervently desired, what are the odds we actually end-up with a brokered convention?

Agree.
John McCain is this election cycle’s version of Bob Dole. Both the Clinton and Obama camps are licking their chops at the prospect of facing McCain.
Can’t put my finger on it, but somehow I just don’t like the guy. On the other hand, there is something about Mike Huckabee that I just plain like.
Nothing at all against Romney, I just like Mike.

Sorry but I can't agree with you. A brokered convention would be great but I don't think keeping Huckleberry in the race will accomplish that. Huck's only function now is to split conservatives and act as McCain's stalking horse. McCain can only beat Romney in a three man race. Head to head he's dead in the water.
I understand and empathize with your misgivings about Mitt...but he IS campaigning as a conservative and he's hitched his wagon to conservative issues. I've been actively pro life ever since the very first time I heard the Roe v Wade decision condemned from the pulpit when I was 15 years old. I've marched, lobbied, prayed and counseled teenagers for th epro-life cause. All my adult life I've tried to convert pro choicers...Mitt Romney says he's had a conversion. I'll take him at his word.

As a fellow Thompson supporter, I have to say that Huck is simply not viable as a candidate and can never win. A vote for him is a vote for McCain who is our (as conservatives) worst nightmare.
I have to say, moving to and supporting Romney would be a whole lot smarter, and quite frankly, I think he's a lot more conservative than Huck.
So, I respectfully disagree with your post.

Well said, I had come to the same conclusion. To those who say Huckabee is too liberal, well then start sending him emails explaining exactly what he is doing wrong and ask him to change. (Hint - yelling "you're not conservative" is not the correct procedure.) Tell him what you want. That's what I'm doing.
And I'm also voting for Huckabee.

Fred Thompson needs to make sure he is registered as a candidate for president in every state.
That one act would give true conservatives a write-in candidate, and it may come down to that by November.
