Clemson Lawsuit
by: Louisa Tavlas, January 31, 2008
A lawsuit filed by a former Clemson University advisor alleges that he was fired after raising questions over the schools increased tuition, according to The Tiger Town Observer, Clemsons Conservative Journal of News and Opinion.
Chalmers Eugene Troutman, who in May 2005 was named Executive Secretary of the Board of Trustees, claims that marked tuition increases since 2000 are not only unnecessary, but have overstuffed a rainy day fund that has grown to 80 million dollars.
Troutman also accuses select University officials of corrupt business practices and mismanagement of the schools financial assets.
The January 9 suit was filed with the Richland County Clerk of Courts office, and names President James Barker, General Counselor Clay Steadman, Provost Doris Helms, and, with the exception of David Wilkins, the entire Clemson board of Trustees.
The complaint reads: Representatives of the University made non-factual public statements regarding the need for tuition increases. Year after year, the Defendants hoarded the cash generated by these increases.
Troutman was named Executive Secretary of the Board of Trustees in May 2005. While acting as Executive Secretary, he voiced criticisms over improper management, which he felt had led to Clemons increasingly troubling financial problems. This led to increasing friction between Troutman and the Board of Trustees, culminating in his removal in August 2007.
Troutman seeks unspecified damages, and wants to be rehired in his previous position as board secretary and advisor to university President James Barker. Barker is one of the defendants in the suit.
In the lawsuit, Troutman indicates that he was fired after refusing to resign because the University was uncomfortable with his perceived watchdog role. He also explains that Clemsons team player system of management prevented him from installing necessary checks and balances...

Looks as though at least one Clemson Tiger not only has claws, he has the cajones that back them up! Go git’em Tiger!!
Good old boys giving a squeaky wheel the grease.
Reminds me of my Dad who once took a job as a small town manager.
The disruption caused by his request to have town employees submit a receipt each time they filled city vehicles with gas from the maintenance yard was near nuclear.
Seems that filling personal boats, campers and pick-up trucks on Friday afternoons was a job perk that dare not be questioned.
Uh-oh. Dat tail ain’t waggin.
I am taking this report under consideration when I get a request for contributions from the Alumni Fund. Used to be when I went to Clemson tuition was $750 a year and that included Room and Board!
Like him or not “Pitchfork” Ben Tillman was the driving force in creating Clemson A&M which was founded for poor “Country Boys”.It was pretty much like that until the big change that eliminated the Cadet Corps and Clemson went Coed in 1956.I suppose that ole Ben where ever he is now is spinning in his grave.
Now its “big time” like the rest of the colleges and the uniqueness and character of the place that was Clemson A&M is gone for ever.
“Now its big time”
It’s like almost every University. Tiger Paws rule, especially on Saturday.
My Dad went to Clemson and I remember Frank Howard and followed the team until Danny Ford appeared on the field.
I just noted to one of our administrators that was proudly stating how important football, and a national championship, (LSU) was to raising funds for our endowment (550M) that Harvard had reached 34B and he continued on with the football RaRa. He still thinks football is the more important than academics.
I see where Harvard finally started using their hoard of endowment money ($50 billion????) to start subsidizing tuition for some students. The greed and leftwing politics in most universities is outrageous. Clemson is not in that category by many measures and Barker is a true first class leader. I like Sanford’s long term goal to essentially privatize state colleges.
Drivers education will be canceled for the remainder of the week.
The mule is being used for sex ed.
Gamecock’s directions to Clemson: “West till you smell it, and south till you step in it.”
“I like Sanfords long term goal to essentially privatize state colleges.”
At my institution we produce approximately 85% of our budget. Our teaching hospital makes its own budget and returns money (profit) to the state general fund every year. All we hear is what we cost the state and our budget gets cut every time the legislature is in session. In total we are paying to work here. We are a great whipping boy and cash cow for legislators. We are also a dumping ground for their political friends out of a job. Their cost would probably make up the 15%. I’m for privatization.
Most of the students tuition goes to administrative salaries and other costs not faculty salaries.
I think you mean North, but point taken.
Oh, almost forgot:

I went to school in Columbia, but not to USC. I don't have a dog in that fight.
