I remember thinking 8 years ago, "If we get the tax cut and a couple of quality Supreme Court appointments, that would be a success. A bare minimum, but a success."

That's about what we got. Throw in the actions after 9/11 (protecting the country) and you have a relatively successful term from a conservative "bare-minimum" point of view. The amnesty thing, however, was a real betrayal.

One thing I'll say about McCain--anything we get will be gravy, since we can expect nothing from him but betrayals.

But who would have believed a Republican president with a Republican Congress could turn a sizable budget surplus into a cavernous deficit and add a trillion dollars to the national debt, allow another 10 million unknown people over our border, and create a massive new Medicare entitlement? Who would have thought that finally getting rid of Saddam Hussein would be so controversial and lead to the loss of the GOP congressional majority? Who would have thought a so-called great conservative like Tom Delay would run a machine so corrupt?
