A .22 LR will work, if you hit the assailant in the eye socket. However, that is a very difficult shot, especially under the stress of a combat situation.
A 9mm, a .40 S&W, .45 ACP, .357 Sig, will generally smash through to disrupt the central nervous system, effecting a permanent cure to violent criminal tendencies.
In revolvers, a .357 Mag, .41 Mag, or a .44 Mag will effect the same cure. I will grant the .44 is getting a bit heavy in recoil for rapid fire control, and there is a bit of a problem with over penetration.
