“Haiti has no social security, nor welfare, nor unemployment benefits”

Sure they do. For the rulers and their military who protect them.

The food is hoarded and controlled by those in power.
It’s rationed out.

Our welfare system works the same way. Foods stamps are rationed/capped.

Their situation as just an extreme example when that type of system fails.
No incentive to work.
No incentive to feed yourself.
When the government takes and takes and takes, as Hillary wants to do, to provide womb to tomb coverage for your every waking need, pretty soon there will be no need to be self supportive.

Then you end up like Haiti. Government controlled everything.

And again, I didn't say people deserved to starve anywhere. I'm not happy people will starve, but they most certainly will.

Don't use the "we send billions in aid" crap with me, I told you in a previous post that I don't approve of that either. This situation can be handled through donations of people, time, money, and education.

Judge that however you wish.

Something I need to point out to you is that when the Haitians took over their half of the island, it was a propserous sugar growing area and was also producing other crops.

Please note that South Africa was also once wealthy, that Rhodesia was a land of well tended farms with a food surplus and a stable economy.

Around the world, not one black country has ever succeeded.

Could this be because not one black country has adopted the American government system(pre-socialist phase, that is) and thus reaped the benefits we have?

Haiti has worked long and hard to sink into the hopeless pit of cultural and social degradation which it diligently worked for generations to create.

Hongkong is a mere rocky bit of land, and has a population which makes Haiti seem empty by comparison. Yet Hongkong is wealthy.

In closing, the American black community has also been severely damaged by the abandonment of American values in the welfare era which LBJ created (the “Great Society”).

That socialist wet dream turned out to be neither ‘great” not supportive of anything resembling a “society”.

hat it produced was a population of thugs, druggies, thieves, and a plethora of unpaid prostitutes usually called “welfare mothers”.

Lest you think the “Great Society” negatively impacted only blacks, consider that before the administration of LBJ, black bastardy level was about 25%. Now, it is some 80%.

PS Thanks to LBJ, white bastardy is up to 25%.

I assume that includes parts of Newark, N.J., L.A., Chicago, Detroit, etc. etc.?

By all means help away, if you think you must.

I just wouldn't be too quick in chastising others for an opposing view. You know, one born out of the belief in self-reliance?

Read an article years ago about Haiti. The thesis was that their economic woes stem mainly from a poor tradition of supporting property rights. Their neighbor, the Dominican Republic has better support for property rights and a sounder economy.

Re: Around the world, not one black country has ever succeeded.

Wow. So if they had the fortune of being born somewhere else by chance) say Saudi Arabia or other oil producing countries, then they would have “succeeded”?

If this is your measure of whether a people succeed or not, I think you need to reevaluate your logic.

Economics is a function of, and the net result of, the society in which it exists. It is also a useful measure of that society.

Haiti, for all practical purposes, has no real social system.

Thugs and thieves do not a government make.

I’m sorry but if I have resorted to feeding my family dirt just to survive I have shirked my duty do kick the living crap out of some leaders. I’d rather be a bullet ridden corpse than beg for food while I give my kid anothe dirt cookie. Wtf is wrong with these people?

Same goes for starving north koreans. Its hard to feel bad for folks who aren’t creative enough to stand up and fight. Dead is better than destitute.

Re: out of the belief in self-reliance?

Judging by the posts here, that means only helping one’s self.

Re: hard to feel bad for folks who aren’t creative enough to stand up and fight.

If you are getting 50 calories a day, how COULD one stand up and fight as you say?

Try it yourself. Go for a week on 50 calories a day.

"I’ve worked with a few of the educated rich ruling class from Haiti and they were very good folk."

Thanks for the laugh Joe.

I'll bet Mugabe is a heck of a guy also.

A whole lot of crime and corruption there.
And always someone in the background taking advantage of the chaos.

Re: A whole lot of crime and corruption there.

That could be said of ANY country.

Only a matter of degree of difference.

Well said. After much reading about Haiti, one thing I have NEVER seen is that the rich ruling class were “good folk”.

I have little knowledge about the situation in Haiti.

I infer from the responses in this thread that it is a very corrupt government. These response imply that if I donate money, or if I insist that the US shift funding towards Haiti, that that funding will only end up in the hands of the corrupt government officials (making them even more powerful).

However, I am appalled at the conditions described in this article, as well as the first hand reports from my next door (conservative-leaning) neighbors. They “sneak” things into the country as well.

Sneaking aid past the corrupt government sounds woefully inadequate. So I ask, not as a challenge but as a real question, what can we do to get a lot of aid to the people that need it?

Works two jobs to be able to send most of his monies home to provide for about twenty family members including his own children and folks
Humble, hard working and just a nice guy but hey don’t let the facts shake ya.

I surrender.

You either have a reading comprehension issue, or are blinded by tears for your fellow man.

In any case, here's my white flag. It may help clear your eyes, or bandage your wounds.

Sure ONE person on 50 cals/day is a weak individual but 50 of them can sureley overpower a couple of armed thugs and get some equalizers thereby inspiring another 50 to join them. Before long you have enough guns to take the food that you need.

Not to mention if all there is to eat is dirt cookies those dead gunmen would provide some decent protein to gain some strength for the next engagement.

Appalled? Well those are REAL options I would consider IF I were subjected to a government starving me out of existence. If you wouldn’t you don’t really want to live let alone live free and therefore do not warrant any sympathy from me. Pity yes, sympathy no.
