Reluctant Nichol allows sex-workers show at W&M

College of William and Mary President Gene Nichol gave students the go-ahead this morning to hold the controversial Sex Workers' Art Show on campus next month.

Students were unable to find an off-campus venue, however, and Nichol said the First Amendment and "defining traditions of openness that sustain universities" required he permit the show be held at the college.

A Unitarian Universalist church in James City County had considered hosting the show, according to co-pastor Rev. Jennifer Ryu. County law, however, prohibited the church from hosting events that might feature public nudity, she said.

And in 2006, W&M had the cross in the Wren Chapel removed, so as to not offend anyone.

Hypocrites.

The Sex Workers' Art Show features performances and monologues by strippers, prostitutes and other sex workers, with its goal being to "dispel the myth that (the performers) are anything short of artists, innovators, and geniuses."

When I was in college I also read Playboy for the articles...

Sadly, that’s my alma mater.

But happily, they have not gotten any more of my money in years — since Dr. Sullivan came in, and now Nichol.

I have written them to tell them why, AND have notified the Alumni Assoc. to not solicit me until Nichol is GONE.

“Nichol said the First Amendment and “defining traditions of openness that sustain universities” required he permit the show be held at the college”

Did William and Mary become a state school? The First Amendment does not require that a private institution provide a forum such as this.

And think about that reasoning applied to other events.

Would he say that the defining traditions of openness that sustain universities require that a gun show be held on campus?

Would he say that such traditions of openness require that prayer services or a Jehovah’s Witnesses convention be held on campus?

Would he say that a seminar sponsored by Free Republic had to be allowed due to the openness that sustain universities?

Would he say that groups opposed to abortion, affirmative action, or same sex marriage must be allowed to speak on campus due to his reasoning?

Probably they think they invented sex after all, like every other generation of idiots.

WM is a public institution. I know this because my sister transferred there from UVA last year.

rabscuttle385 advises it is a state school.

I like your reasoning DSD - but are we being naive to think that educators would be consistent and fair to non-PC groups???

I just hope this brings Nichol one step closer to being ousted from my alma mater. I can’t stand what this guy has been doing.
