The race for Missouri governor is getting crowded.

U-S Representative Kenny Hulshof announced, he's throwing his hat into the ring for the Republican nomination.

That now adds up to three Republican running for the office, and one Democrat.

Hulshof does have a local connection, his wife, Renee grew up in Hannibal.

That 3 way primary isn’t going to help matters, either. I’m tentatively leaning to Sarah Steelman in this race.

In the race to succeed Hulshof, GOP state Senator John Griesheimer is the front-runner if he wants the job. The fact that he’s from the southeast fringe of the district could be a problem, but shouldn’t be a huge one.

Remember, too, that this district is not a traditional GOP one. It was the part of Missouri called "Little Dixie" (odd, since it was north of St. Louis, most notably including Mark Twain's homebase of Hannibal) and when Hulshof upset Harold Volkmer in '96, it was the first Republican win in the district since Theodore Huckreide in 1920. Huckreide had beaten the legendary ex-Speaker Champ Clark that year (and Clark died only a day or so before the end of the session in March 1921). Clark's son 12 years later would defeat my cousin, Republican former St. Louis Mayor Henry Kiel, for the open Senate seat (where my cousin received more votes than Hoover did).

The seat leans Republican by 7%. Not overwhelming but we will be favored, but Dem’s do have an opening.

This is just south of me. Anything along the Mississippi around here is generally going to be Democrat to a large degree.

But fortunately, conservative Democrat. Some of these areas are flipping as the ‘Rat party gets more liberal.

Where did you get the 7% lean from, the 2000 presidential results? President Bush carried the CD 59%-41% in 2004.

Oh, that explains it. The Cook Partisan Rating (or whatever it’s called) was based on the 2000 presidential election results (the 2004 Almanac was published the year before the 2004 elections), and President Bush carried the MO-09 by 55%-42% in 2000.
