A couple of your reasons that seniors vote for McCain are right on, except I’m sure that wanting cheap labor to do their lawns is exactly right. I’ve been thinking that a lot of the people who are not opposed to illegal immigration have no real experience with the other side of the immigration issue. The only Mexicans that they know are the hard working laborers who mow their lawns and clean their houses. They feel sorry for them, and like you said, they like the cheap labor.

The exit polls show that the economy is very important, but as you allude to, the way this manifests itself among the elderly is a very pro-McCain tilt. The elderly voters in FL think the economy is soft and they want McCain to take care of them. That's why Romney (sounding like Hillary Clinton) attacked McCain on the prescription drug bill no vote. Romney has to scare elderly voters into thinking that McCain won't protect them, but they see McCain as an old guy and think he'll protect them since he's old, too. The elderly have an initial reaction to McCain that Romney has to fight hard to overturn.

A dear friend was a died in the wool staunch conservative until her elderly mother and husband became ill and she needed in house help.

Suddenly, everything changed.

Gawd, I hope FL elderly voters aren’t so simplistic!! Who’d have thunk? I dunno about this line of reasoning...no offense, though...
