Thanks for the original post. As a former pastor myself, I was orginally surprised with Dobson's perceived gamesmanship in this pericope of American politics. He was usually an "above-the-fray" kinda guy.
It is never surprising that when you criticize a highly influential member of an organization or community (i.e. Evangelicals), that many of the people in the community cannot separate the criticism of the individual from criticism of the founding principles of the community. Having been up close and personal like for some of the Bakker/Swaggart "fun", I have seen it all too well.
Having seen the machinations on the inside of denominational food fights, it surprises me not in the least that Huckabee and Dobson can both show some surprising lacks in values and yet have their true believers soldier bravely on, defending them they know not why. Other than that they are "men of God." But "man of God" is not a position. It is a person who exhibits God's purity and righteousness. We in the Evangelical movement have often mistaken position for anointing or favor. They are quite different.
