Speaking freely, not intelligently

Rick Majerus has declared he is in favor of abortion, stem-cell research, gun control and raising the white flag in Iraq.

This is all fairly standard boilerplate of the left, and Majerus counts himself a member in good standing with George Soros and the other leading agents of socialistic change in America. Majerus even campaigned for John FrankenKerry in three states in the 2004 presidential election.

Not that the Majerus factor catapulted FrankenKerry to the White House.

The political beliefs of a college basketball coach would be fairly pedestrian stuff, except Majerus scribbles his X's and O's at a Jesuit institution. And Roman Catholics can be unyielding on the issue of abortion, considering church doctrine is fairly clear on the topic. The church is pro-life. End of discussion.

Majerus was at a recent Hillary Rodham Clinton rally in suburban St. Louis, where a television news crew stuck a microphone in the face of the coach and he did what comes naturally to him, which is speak in his unguarded way.

Majerus is an orator of distinction. Ask him a question and he is liable to give you 30 minutes of unfiltered dialogue. He can be entertaining, charming and amusing, especially if he is telling old Al McGuire stories or making light of his rotund physique.

Majerus is as driven and flawed as any college basketball coach there is. The flaws — the run-ins with players and his eccentricities — are forgiven because of his capacity to win games. And that is why he was hired by Saint Louis University, a college basketball afterthought until he landed there.

Majerus now finds himself in an off-court fight after his pro-abortion views received a thorough airing out last week.

"Majerus probably would be unhappy if one of his assistants used his free-speech right to publicly question the defensive philosophy of the basketball program."

Sad - I thought Majerus was smarter than this.

We need to rethink secession along political lines.
