... live in cramped, oxygen-starved burrows some six feet underground... Sounds like my office.

I thought science thought the only creatures impervious to pain were human babies during abortion.

“Show it a picture of hillary, helen thomas or rosie in their birthday suites.
That will more than hurt it.”
Au Contraire: The rats will probably find any one of those three attractive, perfect specimens of mole rat femininity.

They don’t know when they need to go to the restroom, they don’t know when they’re hungry, then don’t know when they have a tummy ache, cramps and upset stomach.
Its the little things that cause them more trouble.

Probably why they make such great spies.

"They're the nicest, sweetest animals I've ever worked with they look frightening, but they're very gentle," said neurobiologist Thomas Park at the University of Illinois at Chicago"
And then we injected them with acid.

Ah, another Kim Possible viewer. One of the Grandkids loves the naked mole rate character.

Thanks to my sweet and wonderful daughter, I am completely familiar with this little guy, as well as his taco-eating owner. I also know all of the words to the Kim Possible theme song.

I’m not huge on seeing any gentle creature hurt but let’s be realistic...they used acid at about the strength of lemon juice, according to the article. It’s enough to get a reaction without being outright torture for the lil guys. Having a rat’s paw sting momentarily is well worth the possibility of better medical care for humans.

*laugh* No, I’m not a Kim Possible viewer. Looks like one of the better kids’ shows but I’m too old to watch it even for being ironically hip... and I don’t have kids yet. But as an amateur naturalist flipping through the dials, the little feller caught my attention some years ago.
