How does it compare with a Springfield XD? The reason I ask is that I have an NRA grant to buy pistols for our collegiate marksmanship group. Glocks are out because we train women, and the grip is just too big for their small hands. I've shot the Springfield, but not the M&P (though I have examined one, and found it to be very pleasant). If it were me we'd buy Browning HiPowers, BUT, the $150-200 price difference isn't a good use of the Friends of the NRA's money (IMHO).

Centerfires? Why not Ruger 22's, ammo is far less expensive?

M&P or XD in 9mm would both be great choices, I'd go with the best deal you can get on either one.

I have a friend who reviews firearms for some firearms publications. He has reviewed both the XD and M&P.

He prefers the XD's trigger. Both were good on the range. Both seemed capable of good durability.

The XD is a great gun and a favorite of mine. I really like the feel of both the XD and the M&P. I would take the time and get familiar with these guns and the students as well and then buy. You might also consider the Ruger SR9. The Ruger is not a flat top and some like that better. You will get great service out of all the mentioned above. I have had good luck with my Glock 27 and also my Sigs.

Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction

Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot

Always keep the gun unloaded until ready to use

Dear RKV:

I wish I could tell you, but I haven’t shot an XD. I’ve seen some people shoot them in matches, and they like them, but I have no first hand experience.

I do like the M&P trigger much better than a Glock’s, and I’ve been told that a non-professional can file the sear and make it even better.

I don’t think you could go wrong with the M&P. The interchangeable grip swells are great. I have an average size hand, so I have settled on the “medium.”

Let me know what you decide.

P.S. Is that a UC Santa Barbara sweatshirt? Do THEY have a pistol team??

I have a friend whose nine year old son shoots a Spingfield XD 9mm in competition. And he doesn’t place last either!
