Lets face it: the majority of those who supported Fred Thompson did so because they sincerely believed that he was the only reliable conservative in the race. Few questioned his commitment to conservative principles. Not even his opponents, who picked on his speaking style and campaign schedule rather than his policy proposals, questioned his principles.
Upon Thompsons withdrawal, Mitt Romney released the following statement: Throughout this campaign, Fred Thompson brought a laudable focus to the challenges confronting our country and the solutions necessary to meet them. He stood for strong conservative ideas and believed strongly in the need to keep our conservative coalition together.
Wow! One heck of an admission for a candidate whose campaign has centered on claiming the embodiment of Reaganite principles.
Romney then said that Thompson focused on pulling together the old Reagan coalition, the conservative coalition of social, economic and foreign policy conservatives . . . And so his leaving the race is sad for those who were big fans of his, but it probably helps my effort in terms of bringing together those Reagan coalition individuals, and it probably will be a bit of a boost for me.

I cannot embrace John McCain. I might be able to shake hands with Mitt Romney.

Hey, enjoy your choice because it is on the way friend.
I signed up at Mitt’s site, but haven’t donated or volunteered, yet.
It’s amazing how often, from the media and pundits, we hear how Fred was the one who could have unified the party. If we’d heard it that much two months ago, Fred would be cruising to the nomination.
The MSM is choosing our candidate.
Sorry. That isn’t going to happen. Moderates in the GOP are handing this election to the Dems. Don’t come crying to me when it does.
Fredheads can embrace McCain because Fredheads never minded Fred’s 1A rights infringements.....so why would they mind McCain’s 1A rights infringements?
Formerly, Fred. Currently, Mitt.

It’s all a game to the media. They say what they want, when thy want.
Yeah, Hillary’s inauguration day will bring him right back around to being his old liberal self, I’m sure.
Amen and right on! You’re not the only one that feels this way!
I’ll vote for Romney as my second choice, since Fred was clearly so much more consistently conservative. The other 3 pygmies will be far worse than he, both as candidates against the jackass party and as President. IMHO, there’s as much gap between Fred and Romney as between Romney and the 3 pygmies. But they are ALL head and shoulders above the jackasses.
Yeah, this year he says he is, but what will he be next year, or the next, or the one after that? Go to YouTube and check out a few clips of his TV appearances in MA over the last few years. He's changed colors more often than a chameleon in a box of crayons.
Don't get me wrong, he's no worse than the other three, and better by far than either McCain or Rudy. I will vote for either him or the Huckster in the GA primary, I haven't decided which, but only for the personal satisfaction of registering my protest against the two who are the most fitting specimens of the RINO breed I can think of offhand. That may seem petty, unreasonable, and illogical, but IMO logic and reason flew out the window together the same day this abysmal primary race began.
So the Mass plan is a flop, lets give him the entire nation's health care for a shot at a "do-over?"
“Why Fredheads Can Embrace John McCain and Mitt Romney”
Because we have no other choices?
Bottom line: Romney is the one most able to defeat Hillary or Obama.
Oh, they most definitely are.
But, of course, the ultimate blame for that rests with the people themselves.
I've never been more ashamed of Republicans than I am right now.
Well, that's worked quite well for our liberal wannabe despots so far, why would they want to change anything?
Hmmm...
Last time I checked Alan Keyes is on the Maryland ballot.
Well said.
(Neither Romney, nor any of his numerous able-bodied sons served in the military. Sorry, with that many sons, if the family respects, at all, people who serve, one would serve.)
