Why Fredheads Can Embrace John McCain and Mitt Romney
North Star Writers Group ^ | January 29, 2008 | Paul Ibrahim

Let’s face it: the majority of those who supported Fred Thompson did so because they sincerely believed that he was the only reliable conservative in the race. Few questioned his commitment to conservative principles. Not even his opponents, who picked on his speaking style and campaign schedule rather than his policy proposals, questioned his principles.

Upon Thompson’s withdrawal, Mitt Romney released the following statement: “Throughout this campaign, Fred Thompson brought a laudable focus to the challenges confronting our country and the solutions necessary to meet them. He stood for strong conservative ideas and believed strongly in the need to keep our conservative coalition together.”

Wow! One heck of an admission for a candidate whose campaign has centered on claiming the embodiment of Reaganite principles.

Romney then said that Thompson “focused on pulling together the old Reagan coalition, the conservative coalition of social, economic and foreign policy conservatives . . . And so his leaving the race is sad for those who were big fans of his, but it probably helps my effort in terms of bringing together those Reagan coalition individuals, and it probably will be a bit of a boost for me.”

I haven't sacrificed any principles.

I'm glad you feel that way.

As for me, I absolutely would have to sacrifice principles to support any of the remaining candidates. Trying to convince me that I should do so by trotting out the opposition won't work. I was in the military under her husband, and both the Army and I survived.

In the long run, I fear more for our republic if we don't find a way to get good, solid conservatives back into at least candidacy for high office. Electing RINOs works against that - it enables the media and the rats to guide our own candidate selection processes.

John McCain was an American hero at one point in his life. The same can truthfully be said about George McGovern and Benedict Arnold.

"Tonight on the CBS Evening News, incoming president Hillary Clinton today announced details of her health care plan..."

And next week she'll be nominating Bill for SCOTUS. Wouldn't that be something?

It’s sad that the race to win at all cost will likely end up costing this party’s soul.

As I have stated, I cannot support the remaining candidates without forgoing some or all of my principles. They are not for sale.

Check Romney’s site to see how many FredHeads are now openly supporting Mitt.

And the worst part is that IF a Dem wins and is able to enact Socialism and it fails, uber-libs STILL will not learn a lesson. They still won't realize that socialism is not the answer. They will just say as they always do, "It wasn't implemented correctly." Why? Because Liberalism is truly a mental disorder. Which mental disorder? Insanity.

Definition of Insanity - trying the same thing over and over thinking that you will get a different result.

America has overcome some great obstacles, but we are still trying to rid our Fed Gov of New Deal policies and Great Society policies. I don't feel like burdening my children with having to also overturn the Era of Change policies or the Era of Hillary policies.

Allowing Democrats to be elected is far more damaging.

You may continue to cut off your nose to spite your face. The rest of us will continue working towards our goals even if they all may not be actualized immediately if not sooner.

And he’d probably win that nomination, too, if the electoral tide puts Hillary in the White House.

Cannot believe how some people are willing to lose everything for the sake of gaining nothing.

I'm one. I was a Fredhead a year ago when talk about a Thompson candidacy was little more than wishful thinking. I made several large (for me) contributions and spent hours calling into SC on my dime to support Fred. And then he quit. I don't understand folks who insist on voting for a guy who gave up and quit before the thing got going good. As far as I'm concerned a vote for Fred is a complete waste of time. Not only does he not deserve the vote because he quit, he probably wouldn't support his people wasting their votes anyhow.

I think we need to stop McCain and Mitt's the guy to do it. Go Mitt!

This campaign season has been a rough one. When Fred dropped out, it was quite a disappointment to his supporters.

I've thought about writing in Fred's name in the primary, but have concluded that would not be a wise strategy.

Not all RINOs are created equal. I intend to vote in the primary for the best RINO remaining.

I was never convinced about Thompson in the first place. When his name first started popping up on FR a couple of years ago, a lot of people were merely projecting their beliefs onto him; he was a blank slate for people to color in as they pleased.

He didn’t show me much during the campaign, and certainly did not seem like a better conservative than Duncan Hunter.

Both men are out, and you’re right, it’s not wise to write Thompson—or anyone else—in. May as well scribble in Mickey Mouse, Xenu, or Barry Bonds.

I still believe in Thompson, but to my regret, he is no longer in the race.

I do not want to see Hillary/Obama in the White House. I can only imagine the damage they would do to our country.

You can just look at our polls. When Fred was in it he got over 50%. As soon as he dropped out Romney went to 50%. Us Fredheads had to choose someone. Romney was the lesser of the evils.

I hope for a brokered convention where Fred makes a comeback but I’m not going to rely on one.
