McCain's ACU Ratings Randall Hoven
Senator John McCain's lifetime rating of 82.3% from the American Conservative Union is often cited as proof that he is conservative. Here is a closer look at that 82.3 rating.
First, a rating of 82.3 is not really that high. It puts Senator McCain in 39th place among senators serving in 2006, the latest year for which the ACU has its ratings posted online. For that most recent year in particular, McCain scored only 65, putting him in 47th place for that year. Ben Nelson (D-NE) and Chuck Hagel (R-NE), for example, scored 64 and 75, respectively, in 2006.

I am not defending him.
For me it might come down to this old saying, “The devil you know may be better than the devil you don’t know.”
You ought to know McCain by now.
But it seems like you forget too easily.
McCain has been trying to work out a deal with the Democrats to switch parties for 7 years now, and they’ve finally reached one recently.
McCain denounces conservative judges like Alito and promises not to nominate any like him, and the liberal Washington establishment throws Hillary under the bus, clearing the way for an easy win for McCain.
He and his running mate Joe Lieberman will switch parties after an early high-profile fight McCain picks with the GOP leadership.
Then the majority Democrats pass his agenda.
Why have they agreed to this?
Because they see the writing on the wall about Iraq. They know they’re on the wrong side of history and all their candidates have painted themselves into a corner.
McCain switching parties is their way out.
They want to steal the victory in Iraq from the Republicans and claim it as their own.
This has to do with their long term legacy, because they are now very concerned about a repeat of the reputation they got after Vietnam, and this is their plan to avoid a repeat of it.
Maybe, but if you look at 1998, it was three votes on campaign finance reform and two on tobacco that put him "on the liberal side."
Take votes on his pet campaign finance issue out of the mix and the picture's a little different.
You don't want someone who's too erratic in the White House, and that counts against McCain.
But the idea that being the best follower qualifies one for the Presidency is a questionable one.
And Romney is any better?
Much better. He isn’t touting a 2.6 TRILLION dollar amnesty bill
The amnesty bill will never pass.
I would be much more comfortable having a Republican minority in the Senate fillibustering some of McCain’s proposals, than trying to fillibuster EVERY one of Hillary’s.
Romney is too Clintonesque.

MCCain was 65% last year ... What he did in 1983 is irrelevent. he USED to be a conservative.

That's what John McCain is, and it looks like he is winning ... we will have a moderate vs liberal race if its McCain vs Hillary.
#1. nice resume bullet but we are electing a 70+ yearold RINO, the war hero guy was 40 years ago.
#2. Electability is bunk. He is old, not great on the stump, and his only electoral advantage is that he is so moderate, he wins more swing voters. But the base, like me, will not lift a finger for him.
#3 is BS, but the MSM covers for him like they cover for the Clintons so he gets away with it.
McCain clearly lied on the campaign trail about ‘getting it’ on immigration, then telling Russert he would sign the McCain - Kennedy bill if it came across his desk. He STILL advocates amnesty.
Lied also about Romney, didnt back down on his timetable smear although the pundits universally panned it.

Romney consistently and publicly opposed gay marriage, worked to limit the effects in mass. (succeeded in stopping out of state couples from coming in) called on states to pass constitutional amendments and support for FMA. McCain not. Hillary not.
NRA gave Romney a B in 2002, and he is supporting individual RKBA.
Spending: Cato ranked Romney 15th out of 50 on fiscal responsibility - very high. same ranking had Huckabee at a miserable 45th out of 50.

Romney is the clearly more conservative candidate compared with McCain. That is why pro-amnesty pro-abort and moderates vote for McCain and conservatives vote for Romney.

Exit polls showed if only Republicans had voted in the Republican primary Romney would have won.
Romney has more conservative rhetoric, but a more liberal record.
There is not a damns worth of difference between Romney and Kennedy.
