Howard Dean had similar thoughts - "Dean also suggested that computer makers such as Apple Computer, Dell, Gateway and Sony should be required to include an ID card reader in PCs--and Americans would have to insert their uniform IDs into the reader before they could log on. "One state's smart-card driver's license must be identifiable by another state's card reader," Dean said. "It must also be easily commercialized by the private sector and included in all PCs over time--making the Internet safer and more secure.""

I don't think his use of “get online” was directed to internet use. I think it was more along the lines of get on-track.

Iron Maiden - The Prisoner
I’m on the run kill to eat
You’re starving now you’re dead on your feet
Going all the way nature’s beast
Do what I want and do as I please
Run fight to breathe it’s tough
Now you see me now you don’t
Break the walls I’m coming out
Not a prisoner I’m a free man
And my blood is my own now
Don’t care where the past was
I know where I’m going ... out
If you kill me it’s self defense
If I kill you then I call it vengeance
Spit in your eye I will defy
You’ll be afraid when I call out your name
Run fight to breathe it’s tough
Now you see me now you don’t
Break the walls I’m coming out
Not a prisoner I’m a free man
And my blood is my own now
Don’t care where the past was
I know where I’m going ... out
I’m not a number I’m a free man
I’ll live my life how I want to
You’d better scratch me from your black book
Cos I’ll run rings round you

Get on track doesn’t make much sense though.

I know ID’s are used to log into some secure networks. I use on at work. It just seems a little bizarre that he would be trying to say we need a national ID to privately use the Internet.

An ID card to get online? Gee, could I get that in a convenient barcode tattoo instead?

"Your papers please."
Welcome to the United Soviet States of Amerika.
This is what happens, people, when you don't vote your conscience but allow yourself to be duped into voting for anti-constitutional big government RINOs who don't give a rat's ___ about the people, the constitution and our civil liberties.
One of the 8 Republicans who DIDN'T vote for the national ID card is Ron Paul. The only candidate worthy of a vote.

And what’s going to stop people from lending each other their ID cards to use or “rent” them for a time? Hackers will find their way around this in no time.

He is specifically talking about getting online i.e. the internet, email, etc. It has been his stated position for almost a decade.

I wonder when people will realize that the Bible talked about this and they did not believe it would happen. Under the COMPLETLY FALSE argument that “following the rules” and “Citizenship” Sheeple will turn over the entirety of their lives, freedoms and futures into the hands of people who will very soon afterwords do unspeakable evil.
