“Interesting point about the most corrupt state being Louisiana and province, Quebec, having Arcadian heritages....”
That’s Acadian heritage (in the case of Lousiana). It is an interesting comment by Steyn, but maybe exaggerated in the case of Louisiana, because the title of most corrupt state is disputed by Massachusetts. Where else have local FBI agents been infiltrated by organized crime? Where else do they elect a killer like Ted Kennedy repeatedly, and in full knowledge of his past?
What is sad is that the Acadians of Louisiana (Cajuns, as they are known), who are descended from French inhabitants ethnically cleaned from Nova Scotia by the British, were formerly known as sober, honest, hardworking people.
The Quebecers in older times were similarly independent, religious, and conservative. Somewhere in the 20th Century, they largely abandoned their religion, and turned to socialism and kookie nationalism instead.
I apologize for goring your ox. I think Steyn’s larger point is that we could all learn the lessons of PC and government run amok from those who are there now. We’re very close to the tipping point of 50% of the electorate being net consumers of government largesse - if not there already - and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist, Cajun or otherwise, to realize the implications for those of us who will pay an increasing amount of the freight.
Enjoy Mardi Gras!
