Former Senate Majority Leader Howard Baker has endorsed John McCain for president.
Baker was influential in convincing fellow Tennessean Fred Thompson to run and was an honorary national chair on his campaign.
Baker, who ran unsuccessfully for president in 1980, was also Ronald Reagan's chief of staff and recently served as the U.S. ambassador to Japan.
In a statement released Saturday, McCain said Baker gave up his own political aspirations to join Reagan's staff and guided the president's tax cuts during the 1980s. McCain pledged to continue the Reagan tradition that Baker served.
A spokesman for Baker said the former Tennessee senator would make a statement later.
Ouch! ;-) Insert class envy argument here: Oh but Romney is riiiiich..... so he must be baaa baaa baaaad. ;-)
“The weakest lady in the Senate!” LOL. I will never forget this quote about Baker from the late editor of the Manchester Union Leader. His name escapes me at the moment but he was known as a real hard line right winger. In 1980 Sixty Minutes asked him to rate the GOP candidates and when he referred to Baker in that sneering way I had to laugh. He said Baker was not a man because of how he failed to oppose President Carter on the Panama Canal treay.
More evidence Thompson was McCain’s stalking horse.
I am so tired of these people lecturing me on “fiscal conservatism” when every one of them are getting a government check.
Baker is getting a government welfare pension with the Rolls-Royce health benefits.
And the whole bunch is telling us we should pay for public housing and other goodies for illegals because they do the jobs we won’t.
Then, on top of all this, they say they have some government program to create jobs! They have some government program to bail out bad mortgage lenders.
Lyin’ sacks of shiite.
Yup!..but the problem is they have a record!!!!...thats why so few senators have ever been elected POTUS....that and their over sized egos and elitist attitude they develop from being in the senate..
Mr. Kiss the saudi’s buts
Mr. what’s wahabists?
The piling on for mccain today is beyond a stench.
It is as bad as the days of the paid rudy trolls.
No, but we do have some lollipops. Would you like one?
McCain has a net worth of around $15 million. Maybe he can work nights as a door greeter at Wal-Mart.
More of the same old guard. It’s time for all of them to go home, retire, shut up, etc.
Of course, McCain is also CFR.
Howard Baker? How’s that Iraq Study Group coming along? This is an endorsement that McCain wants? Go figure.
“Senator” was a pejorative in the Roman Empire for a reason...
No that was James Baker - not Howard Baker. Is Howard Baker any better?
Yet ANOTHER reason not to vote for McCain.
re: Panama Canal
Oppose him... shoot he helped him.
I think Rudy will endorse McCain when he bows out.
I did not like Baker to start with - this finishes him off to me.
I apologized to one of my grandsons last night - for letting the country get to this point. He is just beginning his life, and if the dims gain control, it will be bad.
It wasn't just - what - a month or so ago? That McCain was at the bottom of the polls - everyone hated him. This is the worst election ever.
