Sierra Club proposes ‘couch potato’ tax
KOB.com New Mexico ^ | January 27, 2008

The Sierra Club is proposing a tax on video games and televisions with the proceeds going to programs that encourage families to get kids off of the couch and into the mountains. Call it “No Child Left Inside.”

Mike Casaus of the Sierra Club says families hiking a mountain trail together are becoming scarce as childhood diabetes and obesity is soaring, which is why the organization is proposing the one-percent tax.

“What we would do with this excise tax on tvs and video games and this type of equipment is to tax part of the problem to fund the solution,” he says.

The Sierra Club believes the bill would bring in about $4 million that could be used for programs like an outdoor classroom to tech children about the outdoors.

Lawmakers killed the same idea last year.

If we want to tech children about the outdoors can't we just let them look it up on the Internet?

Odd, since the Sierra Club has been fighting against public access at state parks.

And as soon as people get off the sofa and get out on the trails, they’ll start screaming that too many people are visiting the great outdoors and the trails need to be shut down before the unwashed masses destroy nature forever. }:-)4

Rather, they'll impose a use tax on trails and fresh air

The National Forest Circus has been closing down roads and trails for over a decade at the behest of enviro-wacko lobbyists like the SC. Now the backlash. Not enough people get out in the woods to give a hoot about their issues.

I propose that all those hikers, birdwatchewrs, etc, be taxed to help support the great outdoors they love so much, instead of just leaving the cost to those who pony up for hunting and fishing licenses.

And would put some big money in selected Sierra Club pockets.

End of reason for the idea.

Why don’t we have a Boston Tea Party and throw these liberals overboard?

Why “taxes?” Why does it always have to be about money with these non-working, leftist kooks? If “couch potatoes” are so evil, why not just make being a “couch potato” a capital offense?

You said it exactly. The Sierra Club should get back to the basics — each member should go out and kiss a grizzley.

The Sierra Club is among the worst offenders when it comes to complaining about folks using public trails in the wilderness ~ they’d use the funds raised from the tax to build fences and gates to keep us out, and would not cut anyone suffering from diabetes any slack.

I suppose we could get a tax credit for watching Al Gore’s video and liberal biased network news. Too bad no one seems to remember the utter failure of our greatest nanny state legislation, Prohibition.

nanny state legislation

Could one of these 'liberals' tell me what's so liberal about taxing everything in sight, and nanny-state-ing us to death?
