"Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm." -- Ralph Waldo Emerson
It appears to me that most of the folks switching to Romney are doing so with poignant reluctance; his popularity is mostly illusion dominated by half-hearted supporters.
For my part, were Thompson to endorse Romney or join the ticket as VP, my thinking would remain the same: Romney will stay the leftward course that created the Hillary nightmare in the first place. The ONLY solution to this nightmare is for the Republican party to change course.
My only option at this point for working toward a change in course is to reject Romney and the rest of the Republican primary candidates. The short-term consequences of a Democrat in the White House will be dire, but the long-term consequences of endorsing Romney as the chief representative of the Republican party would be worse.
This election is a battle worth losing if it gives Republicans a better chance to win the war -- and it would.
