He is formidable exactly for the reason you stated: vacuous, yes. But, instead of seeing it hot air, look at it as inspirational (Much like Kennedy was against the Washington insider Nixon).
I agree with you: it’s an empty suit standing there. But, don’t underestimate the electorates ability to be swayed by empty rhetoric.

The ladies at the beauty parlor will love Obama. He's black and he'll make those white ladies feel so noble for their endorsement of him. Obama doesn't WANT to have any sustinance to his rhetoric.
He's got a nice manner, doesn't sound like he's from the ghetto, he doesn't look TOO black...
