Schwarzenegger appoints Silicon Valley lawyer Lucy Koh to judgeship

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger today appointed Silicon Valley lawyer Lucy Koh to a Santa Clara County Superior Court judgeship, moving quickly to fill an opening created by the recent disability retirement of Judge Randolf Rice.

Koh, 39, is a partner in the McDermott, Will and Emery law firm, working as a litigator in the intellectual property department with a focus on patent and trade secrets cases. Koh is a former federal prosecutor who served in the major fraud section of the Los Angeles U.S. attorney's office and she worked as a Justice Department lawyer in Washington, D.C. from 1994 to 1997.

A graduate of Harvard law school, Koh describes herself as fluent in Korean on her law firm Web site. She is a Democrat, which did not deter her appointment by Schwarzenegger, who has been more willing than past Republican governors to ignore party affiliation in filling judgeships.

Wonder how much she paid him in campaign contributions and had friends buy the seat.

“...who has been more willing than past Republican governors to ignore party affiliation in filling judgeships.”

Too bad we can’t say the same about the bigots called Democrats.

“She is a Democrat, which did not deter her appointment by Schwarzenegger”

Why, Arnold is a democrat, no person sober can argue he is not. We have come to expect him to appoint fellow cash paying democrats.

I don’t object to a modicum of tough, law-and-order Democrats being named to the bench.

What bothers me is similar to what bothers me about SCOTUS justices:

All of the Dems’ picks are reliable liberals, whereas only about HALF the GOP picks are reliable conservatives. Remember that Brennan, Warren, Blackmun and Stevens all were GOP nominees. To find a Dem SCOTUS pick who proved ideologically disappointing to the Prez who nominated him, you’d have to go back a long ways. Frankfurter, maybe?

I’m not sure what Kennedy was trying to accomplish with Byron White...you’d have to call him a conservative, although by early 60’s standards, you could argue he was mainstream Democrat...

Well, with the Shriver/Kennedy family as in-laws, it helps him at family gatherings at the Compound when he can throw around some names of Dems he has appointed to office..

The significants of the Austrian’s follies is the stupidity of blindly loyal partisan franchise.I appreciate that for many, less well sophisticated voters were motivated by hero worship and still others by pheromones but that doesn't fit this forum's profile.

There is proof of the power of the American Nar Association which the Judiciary Committee looks to for a Seal of Approval when it is considering a nominee for appointment to the SC..Invariably the ABA selects a liberal and just as invariably the Reps-asleep at the switch-fall in line with the Dems on the committee...

Judge Bork and Judge Clarence Thomas were right- they need to change the vetting syetem..and the Reps need to get some backbone and wake up...They let Bork down..Would have been the same with Judge Thomas but the good Judge fought his own case and beat back the RATS who were against him...

Were you on FR during the California recall? I recall (pun intended) the battles between the “Arndroids” and “TomBots”. Tom McClintock supporters were right...Schwarzenegger is “Total RINO” and has done nothing for the California GOP. He has not helped curtail the actions of the libs in Sacto, signed horrible gun legislation, and pimps for global warming.

Enjoy your Celebrity RINO, California, I am glad I moved to Arizona.

between the “Arndroids” and “TomBots”

My recollections were battles between Republican partisans and philosophical conservatives. A battle between feelings, blind loyalty and facts. The Austrian won (twice) and his loyalists on this forum were expunged when they ramped up their support for another liberal Republican; Giuliani.
