Hershey Phases Out Mints Cops Criticized

HERSHEY, Pa. - The Hershey Co. is halting production of Ice Breakers Pacs in response to criticism that the mints look too much like illegal street drugs, the company's president and chief executive officer said Thursday.

Hershey CEO David J. West disclosed the decision during a conference call about the company's newly released fourth-quarter earnings report.

Ice Breakers Pacs, which first hit store shelves in November, are nickel-sized dissolvable pouches with a powdered sweetener inside. The pouches come in blue or orange and bear the Ice Breakers logo.

Members of Philadelphia's police narcotics squad said the mints closely resemble tiny heat-sealed bags used to sell powdered street drugs. They charged that the consequences could be serious if, for example, a child familiar with the mints found a package of cocaine.

Good decision now, but why did they ever decide in the first place to introduce them? Their marketing folks really screwed up.

And stop printing $100 notes. I have seen counterfeits.
Everything for the cops and making their work easier. Ban cars on the freeway....and no more DUI.

In an unrelated development, our 'esteemed' Governor of New York has seen fit to levy a 'sales tax' on the sale of illegal narcotics! Yep, thats what Spitzer is proposing in order to balance the NYS tax-n-spend budget shortfall!

SPITZER 'CRACK TAX' PROTECTS DRUGGIES

Of course, every drug dealer will be lining up at the foot of the State's IRS office to pay this tax, right ????

Linda Wagner, a narcotics officer with the Philadelphia police whose daughter died of a heroin overdose in 2001, had protested the product in letters to both company and government officials. She said she was pleased by Hershey's decision but questioned why it took so long.

"I will not buy a Hershey's product" again, she said. "I think they were really irresponsible" in marketing the product.

She whines because the appearance of the product bothers her, they pull the product, and her response is to boycott. It's not about the product then, she's looking to be permanently offended all the while making demands on others.

Hmmm, wonder if she became a narc cop after the daughter's death, or maybe the problem was that the daughter got a hold of some free samples? Sad but in any case, she and her daughter can go on voting demoncrat...

Weird.

That really does look like an illegal drug. Companies like Hershey's want a squeaky clean image, and I'm surprised this ever made it into production.

When I was in college, at McDonald's the end of the coffee stirrers were small spoons. When the McDonald's hierarchy found out they had become popular for snorting cocaine, they changed to the current flat panel. Nobody made them. They just didn't want McDonald's to become a drug joke.

The death of anyone’s daughter is tragic, but does anyone else find it as stupid as I do that in a city utterly overrun by drugs and violent crime the cops are worried about getting candy off the streets?

Just more symbolism over substance. It’s a lot easier (and safer) to take out frustrations on an innocent candy company than to go after real drug dealers. Why risk a run-in with criminals, when you can score more “for the children” points by bashing the hell out of Hershey.

My guess is they knew what they looked like, and were betting people would find it cool for just that reason.

I also doubt it would be discontinued were is a successful product.
