Mitt quoted the Constitution’s “no religious test” clause as a defense mechanism IMO allmendream, he was spot on about it, but still.
Reagan understood Greatness, I’ve seen optimism from Mitt, but not an appeal to Greatness of America as of yet, Reagan could quote Churchill with aplomb, Romney is not there, none of them are really “there” yet.
If one wanted to see Reagan’s bad side, when there was a small debate in New Hampshire he went off on GHWB and reminded the assemblage that he was paying for the building, and darn it, the debate was going to be run the way he wanted it to be run!
Fun stuff indeed.
Reagan was a common man as well as an intellectual. He could quote great men because he read great men. The man who the press of his day tried to write off as a senile puppet was actually the idea man for the conservative movement and had been for awhile (as the Goldwater support speech shows).
Although didn't “I paid for this microphone” actually play well in the press? I never got the full account of that interplay. I’ll have to look into it. Or ask a FRiend to fill me in.........
“He has all the virtues I dislike and none of the vices I admire.”
Winston Churchill
In war as in life, it is often necessary when some cherished scheme has failed, to take up the best alternative open, and if so, it is folly not to work for it with all your might.
