Hazelwood was probably drunk, but they screwed up the evidence at trial. He told the fourth mate to navigate while he and the other officers got some bunk time. The fourth mate didn’t know how to override the automatic navigation system which steered the ship into the rocks.
Hazelwood’s dereliction of duty was simply astounding.
I rest my case. He apparently didn't know how to sound an alarm, either. OTOH, that's why we calls it "Dead Reckoning" matey. Most of those who rely upon it wind up dead. BTW, what the hell is a "Fourth Mate?" Back when America was a wealthy and powerful country, I recall there were only 3 Mates, then a Boatswain.
