There was even a famous case a few years ago of a pet store owner who was targeted by the Office De La Langue Française for selling English-speaking parrots. The language commissar had gone into the store and heard a bird saying, Whos a pretty boy, then? and decided to take action. I keep trying to find out what happened to the parrot. Presumably it was sent to a re-education camp and emerged years later with a glassy stare saying in a monotone voice, Qui est un joli garcon, hein? I want to have Mark's child.
And I'm a guy.

Thanks for the ping. I subscribe to Imprimus, so I read this first there. But if there's a writer alive who is worth reading twice, his name is Mark Steyn.

The four girls were born at a U.S. hospital because there was no space available at Canadian neonatal intensive care units. Autumn, Brook, Calissa, and Dahlia are in good condition at Benefice Hospital in Great Falls, Montana. Anchor babies from the north?

and Canadian troops got the toughest beach on D-Day... Steyn must be confusing D-Day with Dieppe, where the Canadians got slaughtered.
According to a CBC website that discusses the Canadian landing at Juno beach:
"The bombardment of the beaches began at 6 a.m. Within an hour the lead landing craft were away from the ships. Two hours later, the German defences at Juno Beach had been shattered and Canada had established the beachhead. "
Juno was a cakewalk compared to Omaha beach.

Count the Caribbean, and it’s 3 for 3 - Louisiana, Quebec and Haiti.

I always think of Steyn as the funniest writer out there who is also quite good at analysis. After reading this piece, I think he should be writing text books. They would be both readable and tremendously informative.

Steyn is at his downright scariest when he starts logically dissecting the future prospects of Western Civilization.

Steyn and Krauthammer very rarely screw up. Every ting they say (TV) and write is without a misstep. Very disciplined writers

That's just part of Canadian mythology. Sort of like they believe they soundly defeated the US in the war of 1812, burned down the White House etc. I guess if it helps them sleep better at night.

Canada is literally a dying society. Mark Steyn's point is its viable only to the extent that's it propped up by the American economy next door. But you have wonder whether a country whose natives constitute a shrinking share of the population, will have a welfare state around in say, 30 years' time.
