Hillary Clinton's Quest for Economic Justice (Barf Alert)
Townhall ^ | January 23, 2008 | Jacob Sullum

During this week's Democratic presidential debate, Hillary Clinton said that putting together the right kind of stimulus package is "a part of economic justice." The remark reflected a major campaign theme for the New York senator, who has declared she would pursue "a new vision of economic fairness" as president.

That slogan should set off alarm bells for anyone who recognizes that economic outcomes result from myriad individual choices. To impose her vision of economic fairness, Clinton would have to override those choices, compromising freedom in the name of equality.

Clinton's aim is economic equality, not legal equality, and you really can't have both. As the economist and political philosopher F.A. Hayek observed, equal treatment of people with unequal abilities leads to unequal outcomes. In this sense social justice is, if not a "mirage," as Hayek argued, at least in conflict with procedural justice.

So it's not surprising that many of the policies Clinton believes promote economic fairness strike others as decidedly unfair. In 2006, for example, she endorsed a successful Commerce Department petition by Syracuse candle makers to impose a tariff of more than 100 percent on candles imported from China.

"Our manufacturers deserve a level playing field," Clinton explained, "and we owe it to them to make sure that others do not unfairly circumvent our fair trade practices." In Clinton's view, then, fairness demands that all Americans pay more for candles to subsidize manufacturers in her state.

More generally, Clinton advocates "smart" trade rather than free trade, insisting on "strong protections for workers and the environment" that reduce the competitive advantages of foreign producers. She wants "jobs that cannot be shipped overseas," which can be achieved only by interfering with companies' profit-maximizing (and consumer-benefiting) decisions.

I really despise the phrase economic "justice".

Economic "justice" is as unAmerican as can be. Capitalism is as pure a meritocracy there is despite the New Deal and the burgeoning entitlements drain it has turned out to be.

Now, we have those who want to expand on it by moral imperative as "Economic Justice". Who advises her on these things? Jessse "Jack-Ass" Jackson? Sure sounds like some "PUSH"/Rainbow Coalition initiative/re-cycled 60's slogan.

Economic "justice" has this not so faint stench reminiscent of the "Reparations for Slavery" movement that died a mercifully quick judicial death a few years ago.

Hey Hillary; we actually had a Slavery Reparations agreement known as 40 acres and a mule.
Slavery Reparations:40 acres and a mule

This Hillary is up to no good and we really must keep a close watch on whatever she manages to dredge up from the think-tank cesspool of election ideas she draws upon. She's trying to get the US government to foot the bill on her campaign promises for free money.

Reminds me of the “social justice” term that the lefties always throw out. “Social justice” means that if you’re successful it’s because you’re an evil exploiter of the common man. Basically communism.

“Reminds me of the “social justice” term that the lefties always throw out.”

It reminds me of the ‘fair trading Walmart bashers’ here on FreeRepublic.

Economic justice is liberal code for communism. How do you achieve it other than punishing the successful and rewarding failure through redistribution of wealth? Nevertheless, I do agree with imposing tariffs on internationally trade, since one of the duties of government is to ptotect domestic industries. We would still have an electronics industry if it had been imposed on cheap electronics from Japan. They waged nothing less than economic warfare by dumping their products into our market at below manufacturing cost.

Sounds like Her Thighness is promising all kinds of goodies (I'm sure a 65" high def tv is going to be given to every dimocrapic voter)...

Which will prove that making responsible choices, being a hard worker, doing the right thing... does NOT pay.

We would still have an electronics industry if it had been imposed on cheap electronics from Japan. not been for UNIONS

There - fixed that for you.

It's not about tarrifs. It's about the free labor market and workers being paid reasonable wages. Unions got greedy during the '60's and upped the ante. The Japanese saw this opportunity and started churning out cheap electronics using labor for pennies on the dollar compared to what the union worker was demanding.

The fungus later spread to other industries - Automotive being the most noticable.
40 years later, here we are.

Every bit of it can be traced back to UNIONS.

That’s a good point. I’ve seen that happening with the steel industry: unions demanding more pay even though they’re driving themselves out of business. Still, there should be an alternative to allowing even them to wreck our industrial base.

Barf Alert redundant, “economic justice’ speaks for itself. You can bet that during the campaign no Pubbie will dare to expose this obscenity for fear of offending someone somewhere. After all, aren’t we all for “justice”?! The Left controls the language, and through it, it gets to control the culture, including the political side of it. Just check your own use of the synonym of ‘merry’ for ‘pederasty’. You’ve been had again!

Any time a leftist uses the term “justice”, it means “hand over your money.”
