I have never completely understood the large support for Democrats by Catholics. Seems that on so many issues the Democrats oppose the Catholic Church, but ... It's taking them a long time to get over the 'Rum, Romanism, and Rebellion' faction of the Republican party. Murray Rothbard explains all this very well.
