Humphrey was not appointed Vice President under the 25th Amendment. The office was vacant from Nov 22, 1963 until Jan 20, 1965. Humphrey was elected into the position.

I was also surprised that Reagan was the first R challenger to win in a landslide — also that the sample size is so small.

1888 — Harrison over Cleveland
1980 — Reagan over Carter

The Dems have a larger sample size over the same period...

1892 — Cleveland over Harrison
1912 — Wilson over Taft
1932 — Roosevelt over Hoover
1976 — Carter over Ford
1992 — Clinton over Bush

You are correct about Humphrey's being elected Vice President in 1964. I should have remembered that because I actually attended the 1964 convention, not as a delegate, of course. I was only seven years old, but I remember it well.

And I wish I had had the time to edit the piece before I thought the ideas in it needed to be spread abroad for better minds to chew over.

I wrote the history from memory, which is not my habit. Nevertheless, I really appreciate the correction concerning that old Democrat/Farmer-Labor champion from Minnesota, HHH.

(Can you imagine having to listen to one of Hubie Baby's speeches, commenting on the events of this time? What a fireball he was!)
