Well he sure as hell isn't going to get the Repulican nomination nor is he going to to have enough delegates to have any say on whom the convention nominates. He won't have the ability screw up the convention the way Buchanan did at the 1992 Republican Convention in Houston.
He said he was impressed with the way RP stood up to Hillary and McCain (who often vote the same way). He makes a lot of money in the computer sector, owns his own company, in fact.
These are the folks pushing RP, in my opinion. In the past, the Libertarian message has only gotten 2% to 5% at best.
I'm for anything that gets the message out.

I was there as a delegate.
What lost it for elder Bush was his infamous 'read my lips' speech that he reneged on.
That opened the door for a Perot candidacy, which 'screwed up' the election that year, not the Buchanan candidacy.
If the president had not been so adamant about holding the line on tax increases and then flip-flopping, there would have been no Bubba Klinton in the White House.
